General
Each module comprises battery charger, solid state automatic
changeover device, deep discharge protection circuit, indicator and
polarised battery connector. The method of connection is by terminal
block, and a quick release mechanism is fitted so that leads may easily
be removed. Wires of 0.5 - 2.5mm2 cross section, may be connected
by pushing a solid conductor into the connection or operating the
release mechanism to insert a stranded conductor. The terminal
marked 'starting aid' is fitted with a green/yellow lead with a ring which
is intended to be bolted down by the nearest fixing screw to the
chassis. The wire is not an earth, but merely references the battery
negative to the chassis potential. Earthing would normally be achieved
via the fixing screws and the upper surface of the flange is unpainted
to facilitate this.
Remote mounting
Although all the above units can be housed in a remote gearbox, RS
stock no. 158-0018, the distance between module and luminaire
should be kept to a minimum and must be within 1 metre for the unit to
be considered self contained.
Note: The following combinations are not suitable for remote
mounting.
RS stock no. 222-6305 36W T8 and 40W T12 lamps
Multi-core cables or mineral insulated wires should not be used.
Batteries
The recommended maximum storage time of one year (ICEL.1001)
should preferably not be exceeded, but if cells have been left in a
discharged state over a long period, several charge/discharge cycles
may be necessary to achieve their full working capacity.
Deep discharge protection
The module is fitted with a deep discharge circuit which disconnects
*
the battery after the cell voltage has dropped below the end of
N
discharge level (1 volt per cell) and the circuit will remain inert until the
S
supply is restored. This will protect the battery against the dangers of
S/L
full and deep discharge.
Fuses
a. Battery
A battery fuse is incorporated in the module to protect
the battery from heavy discharge.
b. Charger Although the charger is already short circuit protected a
fused terminal block is provided, giving means of isolation
and test.
Operation
All maintained emergency units are capable of being used in
conjunction with mains controls gear to provide normal switched mains
operations with the facility to operate in the emergency mode upon
mains failure. They are also able to be used in a non-maintained mode
if desired by simply not connecting the mains control gear. A
changeover relay is used in the module to connect the mains gear to
the lamp when the mains is healthy to connect the battery driven
inverter to the lamp when the mains fails.
When the module is connected to the unswitched mains supply the
indicator will light and this shows that a charge current is flowing to the
battery. A charge time of 24 hours should be allowed before testing the
unit for its rated duration. If it does not achieve well in excess of its
rated duration the charge cycle should be repeated.
N.B. It should be noted that simply connecting the battery to the
module will not light the lamp. The lamp will only go into the
emergency mode upon mains failure. The unit may therefore be
tested, and if the mains is not being permanently connected, the
battery may be disconnected and reconnected leaving the unit
inert until mains is again applied.
