The concentration in cooling lubricants and other liquids can be quickly
determined and checked using this device.
The hand-held refractometer is an optical measuring instrument that
offers the following benefits:
•
Precise checking of the concentration
•
Clean measurement method involving minute quantities
•
Extreme ease of handling and maintenance
•
Suitable for all cooling lubricants mixed with water, including semisynthetic
and fully synthetic types. Can also be used for other industrial liquids, such
as those used in washing, pickling and hardening applications. The liquids
to be measured must not be aggressive, since otherwise the prism or the
incident-light plate will be corroded.
•
Precise method of determination, tolerance of +/-0.1% or +/-0.2% with
regard to the concentration.
Principle of measurement
The measurement method is based on the principle of the total reflection of
light beams; such beams strike the liquid layer to be measured (or checked)
at a certain angle and are then refracted by an amount dependent on the
concentration. When performing the measurement, a clearly-visible and
bright measurement line appears across the scale of the instrument and this
indicates the reading. The concentration is determined from the reading and
the relevant concentrate factor.

Procedure for determining the concentration
1. Open the incident-light plate and add the test liquid so that it rests on the
prism (3); then close the plate again. Contaminated media are to be filtered
beforehand.
2. Focus the eyepiece (5) and read off the scale value. Ensure adequate lighting
conditions. If, in spite of applying filtering measures, the measurement line
is not sufficiently in focus (difficult to take reading), it is recommended to
thin the liquid with the same amount of water, and to double the value of the
reading accordingly.
3. Determine the concentration value by multiplying together the scale reading
value and the relevant concentrate factor, or alternatively by reading it off the
nomogram or diagram produced.
Adjustment
Prior to determining or checking the concentration in a liquid, the refractometer
should be brought to room temperature. The device has a ribbed plastic casing,
which serves the purpose of preventing heat being transferred from the hand to the
prism; it would otherwise not be possible to guarantee measurement accuracy.
The scale is to be checked regularly and also if there are large fluctuations in room
temperature. If the measurement line does not pass through "O" when performing
the measurement with pure water, then this value has to be set via the adjustment
screw (1).
Cleaning and maintenance
After being used, the prism surface and the underside of the incident-light plate
should be cleaned with water to remove liquid residue, and subsequently dried.
Do not immerse the instrument in water. The measuring instrument is to be stored
in a dry place.
