Switching on

!
To prevent the formation of condensation, allow the
FSA 500 to adjust to ambient temperature before
switching on the FSA 500.
Briefly press the ON/OFF switch (see fig. 1,
item 4).
 LED A flashes (green) after 4 seconds.
"
FSA 500 is ready for operation.
5.1.2
Switching off
Manual switch-off
Press the ON/OFF switch for approx. 3 seconds.
 LED A off.
"
FSA 500 switched off.
Automatic switch-off in battery mode
An acoustic warning signal sounds if the FSA 500
has not been operated for 10 minutes in battery
mode. The FSA 500 is then switched off automatically
after 30 seconds. After turning the FSA 500 back
on, the desired test step can be recalled in the
FSA 500 CompacSoft [plus] software.

Notes on measurement
DANGER – Risk of electric shock if
measurements are taken on motor vehicles
without the battery B– cable!
Measurements taken with the battery B–
cable not connected to vehicle ground or
the battery negative terminal will result in
injury, heart failure or fatal electric shocks.
For all measurements, connect the
FSA 500 by way of the battery B– cable
to vehicle ground or the battery negative
terminal.
DANGER – Risk of electric shock from
excessively high measurement voltage!
The measurement of voltages in excess of
200 V using CH1 / CH2 multi measurement
cables will result in injury, heart failure or
fatal electric shocks.
CH1 / CH2 multi measurement cables are
only to be used for measuring voltages up
to max. 200 V.
Never use CH1 / CH2 multi measurement
cable to measure mains or similar
voltages.

!
Measurements with FSA 500 are allowed only in a
dry environment.
!
The FSA 500 is not to be used for measuring
isolation from the supply on electric and hybrid
vehicles. Measurements on high-voltage capacitor
ignitions are not allowed as voltage values greater
than 300 Volt may occur in this type of ignition.
!
Measurements on the passenger car piezo common
rail injector are only permitted with special adapter
cables (optional accessories).
!
The test prods supplied with the test prod
set (1 683 050 050) can only be used for
measurements below 30 volts.
Basic approach to measurements on the vehicle:
1. Switch off the ignition.
2. Connect FSA 500 to the battery (B–) or engine
ground via the battery B– cable
3. Connect the required measurement cables to the
vehicle.
!
During a measurement, do not hold the
measurement cables by hand.
4. Switch on the ignition.
5. Perform the measurements.
6. Switch off the ignition after measuring.
7. Disconnect the measurement cables from the vehicle.
8. Disconnect the battery B– cable.
"
Measurement complete.
i
Observational errors may occur while the storage
battery is being charged.
i
During a 24 h measurement, storage battery
operation is not possible (battery life < 4 h).
FSA 500 must then be supplied with voltage from
the power supply unit. The DCU 220 or computer
must also stay enabled during that time (e.g. sleep
mode in Windows operating system should not be
set).
5.3
Software update
i
Proceed as described in sec. 4.3 to update the
software.
