Be sure to note which splint you are using
and follow the instructions that apply to that
splint. Unless otherwise stated, these
instructions apply to both of the splints.
INDICATIONS
• To help prevent ulnar drift and subluxation
caused by arthritis
• To help prevent further deformity caused by
arthritis
CONTRAINDICATIONS
• Not for people who have an allergic reaction
to neoprene or who have a tendency to
develop dermatitis
• Not for use over open wounds and infected
areas
• May not be for people with circulatory
problems
PRECAUTIONS
• These splints are to be fitted initially by a
healthcare professional who is familiar with
the purpose for which they are prescribed.
The healthcare professional is responsible
for providing wearing instructions and
precautions to other healthcare
practitioners, care providers involved in the
patient's care, and the patient.
• If unusual swelling, skin discoloration or
discomfort occurs, use should be
discontinued and a healthcare professional
consulted.
• Be careful that the straps are not so tight
that they interfere with circulation.
• If advanced deformities are present, they
may not be fully correctable and should not
be forced.
In-Line Splint
• After heating splinting material, always
check its temperature before applying it to
the patient.
CARE AND CLEANING
In-Line Splint
• The stay will lose its shape in temperatures
over 135°F (57°C). It should be kept away
from sources of heat such as ovens, hot
water, open flames, and sunny car windows.

• Remove stay before washing splint.
In-Line Splint
Hand-Based In-Line Splint
• Wash frequently to remove body oils and
other soil.
• Fasten hook-and-loop fasteners. Machine or
hand wash fabric in warm water and mild soap.
Rinse thoroughly. Do not wring. Dry at room
temperature. Be sure the splint is completely
dry before reapplying it.
• Do not use ointments or oils under the splint.
• Do not dry clean or expose to heat or sunlight
for extended periods of time.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
Hand-Based In-Line Splint
Applying the splint
1. Place the splint with the hook material facing
up.
2. With the volar surface of the hand toward the
splint, align the fingers with the four finger
web straps and put the thumb through the
hole.
3. Wrap the two proximal splint portions over the
dorsum of the hand and fasten the hook-and-
loop fastener.

In-Line Splint
Modifying optional stay
5. The stay is made from
Aquaplast
®
-T splinting material. Check it for
correct fit as shown in A and B (see page 7).
Note the following:
• It should wrap around the ulnar aspect of
the hand, ending just medially and below
the ulnar styloid.
• It should clear the thenar crease.
6. If modification is needed, soften the stay by
spot heating it with a heat gun or in a heat
pan of water at a temperature of 160° to
170°F (70° to 75°C) for one minute or until
transparent.
7. Mold the stay and let it remain on the patient
until it is completely cool before putting it into
the pocket.
