Be sure to note which splint you are using and
follow the instructions that apply to that splint.
Unless otherwise stated, these instructions
apply to both the preformed splint and the kit.
Figures referred to in the instructions are on
page 10.
INDICATIONS
• For increasing pronation or supination of the
forearm
• May be used following wrist or elbow fracture,
Colles' fracture, Smith's fracture, proximal
radial head fracture, and radial-lunate and
other partial fusions of the carpus
CONTRAINDICATIONS
• Not before sufficient bone healing has
occurred
• Not before pins have been removed
• Not with severe edema
PRECAUTIONS
• Use of this splint requires careful
supervision by a healthcare professional.
Adjustments in the tension should be made
only by a healthcare professional.
• This splint is to be fitted initially by a
healthcare professional who is familiar
with the purpose for which it is prescribed.
The healthcare professional is responsible
for providing wearing instructions
and precautions to other healthcare
practitioners, care providers involved in the
patient's care, and the patient.
• If unusual swelling, skin discoloration
or discomfort occurs, use should be
discontinued and a healthcare professional
consulted.
• After heating splinting material, always
check its temperature before applying it to
the patient.
• Be careful that the straps are not so tight
that they interfere with circulation.
• After making an adjustment in the amount
of force provided, evaluate the splint to
make sure the tension is appropriate.
CARE AND CLEANING
• The splint will lose its shape in temperatures
over 135°F (57°C). It should be kept away
from sources of heat such as ovens, hot
water, open flames, and sunny car windows.
• The splint can be cleaned with soap and
lukewarm water. The straps can be washed
with soap and water, but the adhesive portion
should not be moistened. The splint and
straps should be allowed to dry thoroughly
before reapplication of the splint.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
If using the kit, an elbow and a wrist splint must
be fabricated (see instructions 1 through 16).
If using the preformed elbow and wrist splint
components, begin with instruction 17. The items
included in the preformed splint and the kit are
listed below.
Rolyan Preformed Dynamic Pronation/
Supination Splint—Elbow Component
T he preformed elbow splint includes the
following items:
• pre-padded splint of Polyform
material
• two self-adhesive D-ring straps
• two strap pads
• one metal housing for the tubing
• two 2-part screws
• Allen key
Rolyan Preformed Dynamic Pronation/
Supination Splint—Wrist Component
T he preformed wrist splint includes the following
items:
• Polyform splint with attached metal housing
for tubing
• foam splint liner
• one self-adhesive straight strap with hook
piece
• two self-adhesive D-ring straps
• two strap pads
Dynamic Pronation/Supination Kit
T he kit includes the following items:
• tubing
• two metal housings for the tubing
• four 2-part screws
• Allen key
A dditional items needed when using the kit:
• low-temperature splinting material for splints
• closed-cell padding for splints or
stockinette for wrapping the extremity
• strapping materials
• punch or drill with
• screwdriver
• optional crescent wrenches or vise and dowel
(see instruction 13)
DYNAMIC PRONATION/SUPINATION
KIT
Fabricating the elbow splint
1. Measure and mark a splint that extends
from two-thirds of the length of the humerus
past the elbow to one-third the length of the
forearm. It should be as wide as one-half
of the circumference of the humerus and
proximal forearm.
2. If desired, pad the splint blank. After heating
it, form a posterior elbow splint with the elbow
in 90° of flexion.
Fabricating the wrist splint
3. Measure for the wrist splint as follows:
• f rom distal palmar crease to one-half of the
length of the forearm, allowing at least 1
(3.8 cm) between the elbow splint and the
wrist splint
• o ne-half of the largest circumference of the
forearm
• o ne-half of the circumference of the hand at
the MCPs
4. If desired, cut padding to match but do not
attach it to the splint blank.
5. On the splint blank and the padding, mark the
thumb hole approximately 2" (5.1 cm) from
the distal and radial edges.
6. Cut a hole in the padding large enough to
accommodate the thumb and clear an area of
the splint around the thumb that will be rolled
back (see instructions 7 and 10).
7. Apply the padding to the splint blank. After
heating it, cut the thumb hole in the splint
splinting
®
blank and roll the edges of the opening to the
outside surface of the splint.

8. If possible, place the patient's hand in
supination to achieve a gravity-assisted
position.
9. Stand in front of the patient and insert the
thumb through the thumb opening. Extend
the splint over the volar surface of the
forearm. Mold it on the radial side of the
thumb hole and continue to position the splint
symmetrically on the forearm.
10. Roll the edge of the thumb hole back to clear
the thenar eminence.
11. Center the splint along the forearm. Fold
over the distal edge to clear the distal palmar
crease and continue molding the splint.
Attaching the metal housings
12. Place one metal housing on the wrist splint
at the level of the distal radius and ulna and
mark where the housing will attach (see
photo A).
13. If necessary, bend the housing slightly so it
lies flush against the splint as follows:
• T o prevent damaging the three screws that
are protruding from the housing, use the
Allen key to screw them into the housing.
• U se two crescent wrenches and manually
bend the housing, or use a vise as follows:
— O pen the jaws 1

— P lace the housing between the jaws so
the ends rest on top of the edges of the
jaws and the tubing hole fits between the
jaws.

horizontally between the screw holes and
hit it with a hammer to bend the housing.
14. Position the second housing on the lateral
border of the forearm section of the elbow
splint just distal to the elbow crease and mark
where the housing will attach (B).
15. Punch or drill

16. Attach the housings with the 2-part screws
by putting the outer, female portion of the
screw through the splint and the male portion
through the housing.
To attach the tubing and complete the splint, see
instructions 20 through 35.

PRONATION/SUPINATION SPLINT
Completing the elbow and wrist components
17. Check the elbow and wrist components for
proper fit. The two splints should be at least
1
⁄
" (3.8 cm) apart on the forearm.

To trim or modify the splints, spot heat them
with a heat gun or in a heat pan of water at a
temperature of 150° to 160°F (65°–70°C) until
pliable. Heating the entire splint may cause
it to lose its preformed shape. Polyform
has a high degree of drape—for better results
when modifying the material, shape it with
stroking movements.
18. If desired, apply pre-cut padding to the wrist
component.
19. Attach the metal housing to the elbow
component using the pre-drilled holes that
will be on the lateral border of the forearm.
Attach the housing with the 2-part screws
by putting the outer, female portion of the
screw through the splint and the male portion
through the housing.
