to add a further amount of split dry wood until a healthy
bed of glowing coals has formed. You can now add 3 - 4
small to medium pieces of wood. Allow this fire to burn for
a short while.
When you are sure that the wood is burning well, control
that the secondary combustion has occurred. This you may
see as yellow flames burning in front of the air chamber.
Close the start-up air vent and adjust the primary air control
to set your desired heat output level and to maintain safe
operating temperatures.
NB! Never use gasoline or similar liquids to start or "freshen
up" a fire.
Note! Danger of overheating: The stove must never be used
in a manner that causes overheating.
Overheating is defined as overfilling the stove with
firewood and/or leaving the draught vent fully open.
The chimney draught should never exceed 2,5 mm H
Pa) when the stove is in use.
A sure sign of overheating is when parts of the stove glows
red. When this happens, reduce the draught vent opening
immediately.
Never use the following on the fire:
-
household waste
-
painted or impregnated timber - which is very toxic.
-
laminated wooden planks
-
drift wood
-
plastic or any other type of waste product.
These may harm the product and are also pollutants!
Maintenance
Cleaning the glass
From time to time it is necessary to clean off the
accumulated ash from the inside surface of the glass. The
amount of soot which may deposit on the glass might
depend upon the local amount of draught present or the
regulation of the top air control.
Some good advice! For general cleaning, use some kitchen
roll - soak it with hot water, and dip it into some ashes. Rub
the glass with the paper, and you will see that most of the
soot will disappear. Rinse the glass with clean water and
dry completely before burning the stove. If it is necessary
to clean the glass more thoroughly, we re-commend a
"Glass cleaner".
Ash removal
Jøtul F 3 is equipped with an outdoor ash pan, which makes
it easy to remove the ashes. Use the multi-purpose handle
and open the ash door counterclockwise. Transfer the

ashes into the ash pan with a shovel or similar tool. Insert
the pin on the handle into the socket of the ash pan, and
slide it carefully from the stove.
Ashes should be placed in a metal container with a tight
fitting lid.
Leave a little ash in the bottom of the combustion chamber
as a protective insulating layer. By the way - ashes are an
excellent fertilizer.
Cleaning and soot removal
During use of the stove, soot may deposit on the side walls.
Soot insulates a lot and will reduce the heat output of the
stove. To avoid a build up of creosote or condenced water,
it is important on a regular basis to increase the heating to
dry out the deposit.

At least once a year, perform a routine maintenance check.
A good time to do this is when you are cleaning the chimney
and connector.
Cleaning the flue pipe
The easiest way to clean the flue is to loosen the screws
on the top of the side plates and remove the top-plate. If
the stove is connected at the top, the flue has to be cleaned
through the door.
Jøtul recommend that you yourself control the stove
thoroughly after cleaning. Check the door and glass gaskets.
Replace the gaskets if they are loose or create leaks.
External maintenance
Painted products may, after some years of use, change
colour. The surface should be brushed of loose particles
before new paint is applied.
Enamelled products have just to be wiped with a dry cloth.
Don't use soap and water. Eventual spots can be removed
with a cleaning liquids.
Woodlength, quantity and quality
Max. length of the wood logs are 40 cm. The wood logs
should be laid parallel to the back wall of the stove. Jøtul F
3 has with its efficiency a heat output of nominal capacity
of 6 kW. According to calculations the maximum heat output
will consume 2,4 kg quality-wood per hour.
Jøtuls definition of quality-wood
Good quality-wood should be dried so that the water
content is approx. 20-25%. To achieve that, the wood should
