Measuring temperature
Body temperature can vary from 97 °F (36.1 °C)
to 99 °F (37.2 °C). The generally accepted "nor-
mal" temperature is 98.6 °F (37 °C). Usually
your temperature is lower in the morning
than in the afternoon. Normal temperature
varies according to the location of the tem-
perature reading. While oral temperature
follows the guidelines described in this para-
graph, a rectal temperature is generally 1.0 °F
(0.5 °C) higher. Conversely, an axillary (under
the arm) temperature will be 1.0 °F (0.5 °C)
lower. In addition, body temperature tends to
decrease with age. The following table shows
temperature ranges for different age groups:
