SUBWOOFER CONTROLS
BL(Bass Level) Control
This rotary control adjusts the output level of your encore8 Subwoofer,
and should be used to balance the level of the subwoofer with that of
your main speakers.
LPF(Low Pass Filter) Control
This control adjusts the high frequency roll-off of the subwoofer.
Continuously variable from 50Hz to 100Hz, it is used to precisely match
the subwoofer bass reproduction with your main speakers.
A/V(Audio Video) Switch
This switch adjusts the extreme low frequency characteristics of your
subwoofer to provide more bass impact and greater enjoyment of movie
soundtracks. It adds 3dB in the "video" position to precisely match the
subwoofer with the acoustics of your listening room. Start at the "audio"
position. If there is a lack of deep, detailed bass, set the switch to "video".
Power- Auto-On/Auto-Off
This encore8 Subwoofer circuit automatically turns your subwoofer on
as it senses a signal. At a predetermined time after the signal ends, this
circuit will automatically turn the subwoofer off.
During normal operation, the LED located on the front may turn off
during extended periods of low frequency absence, but will immediately
turn on upon the return of a low frequency signal.
SUBWOOFER AND SPEAKER
CONNECTIONS
CAUTION: On the subwoofer, do NOT use both Low Level and High
Level methods simultaneously. Turn off all power in your stereo system
before proceeding with the installation of the subwoofer.
SPEAKER CONNECTIONS:
Conventional Connection for the
encore2 & encore1:
Connect the speaker wire from the positive (RED +) terminal on
the amp to the positive (RED +) terminal on the speaker. Connect the
negative (BLACK -) terminal on the amplifier to the negative (BLACK -)
terminal on the speaker. Connect all five speakers to the correct channel
of the amplifier.
SUBWOOFER CONNECTIONS:
High Level: Connecting the Subwoofer
using the high level speaker connections:
On the rear of your encore8 Subwoofer are two pairs of red and
black binding posts. One set is marked "Input" and one set is marked
"Output", with each pair designated as left or right. Each post is
color-coded black/red. These terminals will accept up to 16-gauge quality
speaker wire. The Inputs should be connected to the left and right
speaker terminals of your amplifier or receiver. The Outputs should run
from the subwoofer to the left and right encore2 main speakers.
Remember: Always connect red-to-red and black-to-black, when making
connections between an amplifier/receiver to the subwoofer. If you
inadvertently reverse one of the connections (i.e., red-to-black), you will
notice a lack of bass from your subwoofer.
Subwoofer Input: Using the Low Level
(RCA)subwoofer output of a receiver,
processor, or crossover:
Connect a single RCA-to-RCA interconnect cable to the "Subwoofer
Output" of your receiver or processor, and then to the RCA "Subwoofer
Input" on the rear panel of the subwoofer. In this case, the speakers will
then be connected directly to the amplifier or receiver in a conventional
connection.
X-Over Input: Using an external crossover:
This method uses a Low Level (RCA) interconnect cable to connect the
"Subwoofer Output" jack from an external crossover such as the Energy
EAC, to the subwoofer's RCA X-Over (crossover) input. This bypasses the
subwoofer's built-in level and frequency controls in favor of the receiver
or processor's crossover. This method also requires that the speakers be
connected conventionally.
SET UP CALIBRATION
For best results when setting up your system, assume your normal
listening position and, if possible, have another person perform the
following adjustments.
1. Set the subwoofer Level Control to its Zero position. Set the
Subwoofer LP Filter Control to 50Hz. Set the loudness and bass
controls on your preamplifier or processor to their "flat" positions.
2. Play a familiar piece of music or video soundtrack that has substantial
bass content.
3. Gradually turn the Subwoofer Level Control clockwise until you
achieve a neutral balance between the subwoofer's deep bass output
and your main speakers.
4. Slowly turn the Subwoofer Low Pass Filter Control clockwise to
reach the best midbass with your main speakers. This will be the
point at which bass retains solid impact and fullness. If the bass is
too boomy or ill defined, you have gone too far and should turn the
control counterclockwise to the best balance point. If the sound is
too thin, then turn the control clockwise to the best balance point.
5. Finally, you may adjust the A/V Switch to the "video" position if you
wish to add impact. Leave the switch in the "audio" position for flat
response.
The Subwoofer Level Control is designed to balance your subwoofer
and main speakers and should NOT be used as a substitute for the
bass and loudness controls on your amplifier or receiver. Adjust the
subwoofer's levels for smoothest low frequency performance. If more
bass is desired, then advance the bass and/or loudness controls on your
main amplifier or receiver.
Speaker wire
Contrary to popular belief, not all speaker wire is the same. The
speaker wire is the "straw" through which the speaker "drinks" from the
amplifier. The lower the quality, the poorer the signal that reaches the
speaker. Ordinary "lamp cord" will degrade the signal, particularly in
lengths of 10-feet (3m) or more, so we strongly recommend the use
of high quality speaker cable to obtain the best performance from your
Energy
®
speakers.
Be sure to turn off your amplifier when connecting speakers to your
amplifier. Not doing so could result in shorting from the speakers leads
and potential damage to the amplifier.
CARE OF FINISH
To maintain the beautiful finish on your new encore Series speakers, from
time to time gently wipe them down with a soft, damp cloth to remove
any dust or stains.
