MAIN SPECIFICATIONS
OPERATION STAND-BY
With the standby function (A) the essential electronic
services of the vehicle can be powered using the auxiliary
cable inserted in the cigar-lighter socket. When the auxiliary
cable connector is connected to the Startronic the red
standby LED lights up: the power supply output is 12Vdc-
1,5A.

(A) Battery Type Selection Key
In this case it is possible to select the type of battery to be
charged. This selection automatically modifies the battery
voltage thresholds when switching from constant current to
constant voltage occurs.
The types of battery that can be selected are:
"GEL": lead-acid batteries with solid electrolyte (2.3
V/element)
"WET": lead-acid batteries with liquid electrolyte (2.4
V/element)
"Ni-Cd": nickel-cadmium batteries (1.4 V/element)
WARNING:
For the nickel-cadmium batteries, the correct number
of elements for the three charge voltages are:
5 elements for 6V batteries
10 elements for 12V batteries
20 elements for 24V batteries (assuming 1.4V/e)
(B) Battery Voltage Selection Key
This key permits selection of the battery voltage. The
scheduled working voltages are 6/12/24 V.
(C) Operating Mode Selection Key
Whenever this key is pressed, one of the following 3
operating modes is selected:
STAND-BY & CHARGE / CHARGE / ST ART
Selection is performed by pressing the various buttons until
the led corresponding to the required mode or setting
comes on; a buzzer indicates that the setting has been
performed.
The STAND-BY function offers a 12Vdc-1.5A stabilised
power supply output which powers the essential vehicle
functions via the cigar lighter socket. This function can also
be performed at the same time as battery charging by

enabling the CHARGE+STD BY function.
The CHARGE function permits initial charging of the battery
at constant current with the value previously set, for a time
selected via the key (D). If the battery voltage is particularly
low, a very small current will be delivered until 1.5 V/e is
reached; once this threshold has been reached the ST500
will set its current until the end-of-charge limits for that
particular type of battery are reached. Once this time has
elapsed, if the battery has not reached a certain battery
voltage level (stored inside the microcontroller) a further 2
hours are added after which the battery charge is switched
off. If the battery charger reaches the reference voltage
before the end of the set time the battery charger switches
off without adding the extra two hours.
The START function permits starts at CONSTANT
VOLTAGE, automatically limiting the current to the pre-set
values with cycles lasting "5 sec ON" and "20 sec OFF".
Blinking of the START led indicates that this function is
enabled.
(D) Charge Time Selection Key
This key permits selection of the charge time for the
CHARGE function. The following times are possible:
2/4/6/10 hours.
(CHARGE) Charge Current Selection Key
Selecting the Charge Current:
This key is used to select the charge current level in
"CHARGE" mode .
The charge currents that can be set are 2/5/10/20/30/40 A.
By setting the key to START, the current available is 300 A
minimum.
(DISPLAY) Current/Voltage/Time Indication Key
Three different displays can be selected with this key:
- "I": the current delivered in Amps is displayed, both in
charge and start;
- "V": in this position the display indicates the output voltage
to the battery in Volts;
- "TIME": in this position the display indicates the amount of
time elapsed during the charge function in hours and
minutes.
