Osteomed Acute (54 880)
How it works
The Osteomed Acute osteoporosis orthosis is a spine
straightening orthotic device; its functionality has been
designed to reflect the latest osteoporosis guidelines is-
sued by the German Association for Osteology (Dachver-
band für Osteologie, DVO). The orthosis helps stabilise
both defective/degenerative vertebrae and the entire
spine from the upper thoracic vertebrae down to the
sacral area. The spine is actively straightened and pain is
reduced. Movement is also restricted at the sagittal level.
Purpose
Osteomed Acute system is a combination of a back splint
and belt system that offers active relief and correction of
the lumbar and thoracic spine at the sagittal level. The
orthosis may only be used for back treatment.
Indications
• Osteoporosis
• Vertebral osteoporotic fractures
• Humpbacks
• Palliative therapy
Contraindications
• Instable vertebral osteoporotic fractures
• Large-scale skin injuries or diseases
• Extensive haematoma and severe swellings
Side effects
To date, no side effects have been registered during
proper use.
Fitting instruction (Technical adviser/Medical equip-
ment supplier) (Fig. 1 - 11)
Required body measurements
1. Body circumference (widest part of the body)
2. Height of the back (from C7 - bottom cleft) (1)
Recommendation: Deduct approx. 11 - 14 cm from the
measured back length (position the splint approx. 4 cm
below C7 and approx. 7 - 10 cm above the bottom cleft).
Fitting the orthosis
3. Adjust the body circumference
Lay the orthosis flat on a table (2) and unfasten the side
sections of the body from the back, measure to the
required total length and shorten the side parts as evenly
as possible (3) before re-fastening them (4).
4. Back length
Adjust the back splint to the measured length (by opening
and closing the screws). Align the splint with the back con-
tour, positioning it always 4 cm below C7 and push back
into the back pocket (5). Shorten the pocket accordingly
(6) and close up the upper pocket fastening (7).
5. Putting on the orthosis, adjusting the length of the
belts:
Put the orthosis on as you would a backpack. Close the
front fastening of the lumbar bandage. For easier closing
the patient can slide his or her hands into the loops of the
front fastening (8).
Check the position of the back splint; it should rest
accurately against the spine. The upper edge of the splint
should not protrude above C7, the lower edge of the
splint should end in the upper third of the sacrum (rule of
thumb: 7 - 10 cm above the bottom cleft).
Check that the belt straps are not twisted.

The patient should now tension the belt straps using both
hands by first pulling the belt straps evenly towards the
front (9) and then fastening them to the front fastening
(10). The patient should notice how the spine feels tangib-
ly, but still pleasantly straighter. Adjust the length of the
shoulder straps and shorten if necessary (11).
Putting on the orthosis (patients) (Fig 12 - 17)
Wear the Osteomed Acute over clothing (shirt/blouse,
sweater), not on your skin. You may find it helpful to
stand in front of a mirror when putting on the orthosis.
The Osteomed Acute is put on using the same principle
as a backpack:
• Open the large front fastening.
• Pull on the orthosis as you would a backpack.
• Put your left and right hands in the loops of the front
fastening (12) and close the two halves of the fastening
(13).
Now check in front of the mirror:
• Check the position of the back splint (14); it should rest
accurately against your spine. The lower edge of the
splint should be slightly above the bottom cleft.
• Check that the belt straps (15) are not twisted.
• Now tension the belt straps using both hands. To do
this, first pull the belts evenly towards the front (16)
and then fasten them to the front fastening (17).
