Measuring the run-on time
Following engine start-up, the blade
rotates and a wind noise is audible. The
run-on time corresponds to the duration of
the wind noise after the engine stops. This
can be measured using a stopwatch.
10. Notes on working with
the machine
A perfect, thick lawn is achieved by
– Mowing at low driving speeds.
– Mowing regularly and keeping the grass
short.
– Not cutting the lawn too short in hot, dry
conditions as it will be burnt by the sun
and become unsightly.
– Using a sharp mowing blade – mowing
blade should therefore be sharpened
regularly (specialist dealer).
– Changing the cutting direction regularly.
10.1 Working area for operator
● For safety reasons, the operator
must stay within the working area
behind the handlebar when starting the
engine and when the engine is running.
Always observe the safety distance
provided by the handlebar.
● The lawn mower must only be operated
by one person. Other persons must
keep out of the danger area. (

This permits accurate mowing along lawn
edges or around plants. The grass is also
rolled in the direction of travel, creating a
characteristic striped lawn pattern.
10.3 Mulching
The multi-mower MB 545 VM is
equipped with a special multi-blade
and a pre-installed mulch insert.
Risk of injury!
Stop the engine and detach the
spark plug socket before working
on the mulch insert.
Inserting the mulch insert
The mulch insert (1) must be inserted in
order to use the machine as a mulching
mower:
● Open the discharge flap and hold it
open.
● Insert mulch insert (1) in the discharge
chute and press from above until both
retaining lugs (2) audibly engage in the
housing.
15
● Close the discharge flap.
Removing the mulch insert
The mulch insert (1) must be removed to
use the machine as a rear discharge
mower or grass collector (with suitable
grass catcher box):
● Open the discharge flap and hold it
open.
4.)
● Lift detent catch (4) and pull mulch
insert (1) diagonally upwards out of the
discharge chute.
16
● Close the discharge flap (rear
discharge mower) or attach the grass
catcher box and close the ejection flap
(grass collector).
10.4 How should mulching be
performed?
A cutting height between 4 and 7 should
be selected for mulching, as this is the
most suitable height for shredding the
grass.
17
If the cutting height is too low, the mower
housing may become clogged, resulting in
blockage of the mowing blade.
It is important to select the correct
operating speed and cutting height for
mulching to allow the multi-blade to
achieve optimal grass shredding and a
good cutting pattern.
In high grass, it is advisable to work in
several stages and in the higher cutting
height settings.
Mulching should not be performed when
the grass is too high or wet.
11. Operating the machine
11.1 Starting the engine
Avoid damage to the machine!
Do not start the engine in tall grass.
Select a higher cutting height
setting if the engine is difficult to
start.
Thanks to the fixed throttle setting,
the engine always operates at the
optimum working speed after
starting.
● Check the oil and fuel levels. (
