7-4 OPERATION PRINCIPLE

Regardless of the type of use, the apparatus must be installed on the harness so that the absor-
ber is connected to dorsal D attachment point.(A marking)
a) STANDARD USE (
"Standard" use is considered to be when the end of the retractable cord of the apparatus is connected
to an anchor point situated inside the perimeter of a circle with a 2 m radius centred on dorsal D point
of the harness (with the exception of the grey area between the user's knees and feet, i.e. approx. 0.5
m above the ground see figure 2a).
b) TERRACE USE (out of
"Terrace" use is considered to be when the end of the retractable cord of the apparatus is connected
to an anchor point situated at the user's feet or just above them (within 0.5 m above the ground). It
is strictly prohibited to connect the equipment under the user's feet (hatched area see figure 2a).
The apparatus has been tested for horizontal use and has also been successfully subjected to a type
A fall-arrest. This involves a fall over a non-cutting steel ridge with no burrs and radius r = 0.5 mm.
However, correct operation in «terrace» mode requires meeting the following requirements:
If the equipment is connected to an anchor point at the user's feet or within 0.5 m above the ground,
the equipment must only be used on type A ridges, for example as can be found on steel profiles,
wooden beams and roof parapets (clad or rounded).
If the equipment is used horizontally in "terrace" mode with a risk of falling from a height onto a ridge,
and the risk assessment made before starting work shows that the ridge is very sharp and/or «has lots
of burrs» (as in the case of an unclad roof, rusty steel beam or concrete edge), you must:
- take appropriate measures before starting work to avoid falling onto the ridge
- or protect the ridge before starting work
- or contact the manufacturer of the fall-arrest system.
-> Non-compliance with these instructions may lead to the fall-arrest system not working and
a major risk of falling and sustaining serious injury or death.
To dampen the pendulum effect at the end of the fall, the working area or the lateral move-
ments of the two sides of the central axis passing through the ground anchor point, must be
limited to a maximum of 1.50 m. Beyond that limit, a class D anchoring device, complying with
EN 795, must be used.
Other precautions:
Distortion of the anchoring device must be taken into account when determining the neces-
sary space under the user's feet. To this end, the indications mentioned in the user instructions
for the anchoring device must be taken into consideration (e.g. the deflection for the movable
lifeline – type B anchor).
Special rescue measures must be defined and users trained for potential falls onto a ridge.
c) OPERATING CONDITIONS AND LIMITS:
Weight of user ≤ 140 kg including equipment. Appendix 3 See marking, page 207(7I)
Temperature of use : from - 30°c to + 60°c (See figure 9)
Can not stop a sinking (pulverulents or muddy products) (See figure 10)
Precautions of use :
Check that the height of the anchorage point above the work space is compatible with the
capacity of the fall arrester and that sufficient clearance exists, which is compatible with the
characteristics of the device in the case of a fall. (see section 7-5).
Check that during use, the cable or the webbing does not get wound around an arm or a leg.
