BATTERY CHARGER
INFORMATION NOTE ON THE BATTERY MAINTENANCE
Batteries have to perform their best during heavy situations. On low tempe-
ratures the batteries tend not to be efficient, therefore it may be difficult to
start the engines, since the oil is colder and thicker, lights, defrosters and win-
dscreen wipers need more power. More power is required from the battery
during these conditions and it is more than what an alternator is able to pro-
duce. Therefore, the battery tend to discharge and that leads to well-known
consequences. With this battery charger combined with an easy maintenance
of the battery, it will be possible to immediately have your car started even
in winter.
If the battery discharges after 2 or 3 days from last charge, it is better for you
to get the alternator and the elements of the battery diagnosed. Batteries
are normally made of 6 elements and it is common that one of them gets da-
maged and unfortunately it is enough for the battery to get entirely broken.
Actually, a broken battery cannot store the charge regardless of the density
and the duration of the charge. In this case, it is better to replace the battery.
The above mentioned diagnoses may appear to be very serious problems for
the battery but we suggest you first to prove the common issues concerning
the disfunctions of the battery, such as cleaning level or wrong connection
between poles and clips. Therefore, in order to avoid this kind of inconve-
nience, it is better to periodically remove both clips and poles and clean them.
After cleaning put some vaseline or grease on both clips and poles. Mount the
clips back and tighten them up around the poles. This procedure will help the
clips to remove poles corrosion and to ensure a good contact.
We suggest you to keep the battery acid at a slightest level higher than the
indicated level by pouring it with some distilled water (never use tap water).
Do not refill more than the indicated level since during the charge the acid
tends to expand and consequently leak. While pouring the battery with di-
stilled water, be sure that the acid does not leak, since it is a highly corrosive
liquid. Check the density of the acid periodically by using a densimeter (easily
available on the market). A densimeter is a plastic or glass syringe-shaped
item that picks a small quantity of the acid from the battery. Inside there is a
small floating graded box that reports the marks LOW-MIDDLE-HIGH on one
side and on the other side it is reported a numbered scale. A fully charged
battery marks a minimum value of 1.250. After checking it, put the acid back
inside the element by paying attention not to splash it.
While charging, gas bubbles can form (they are easily inflammable). According
to the safety standards, it is recommended not to inhale this gas and to pos-
sibly charge the battery in a well-ventilated area in order to avoid humidity
which can damage the transformer.
