OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Wood Creosote
Wood Creosote is a soot or tar-like substance that produces black smoke when burning. Creosote
is formed when burning pellets release organic vapors that combine with ambient moisture. As the
vapor mix cools, it will accumulate inside the cooking chamber and especially the grease exhaust
and smoke stack. When creosote is ignited, it creates an extremely hot fire. Accumulated grease
may also combine with the creosote build-up and contribute to a fire. Creosote may also form when
the fire pot is poorly maintained, the fire pot is over-filled with pellets, or when air-flow to the fire pot
is partially or completely blocked. It becomes dangerous to operate the appliance, when smoke
or flames become dark, sooty, or when the fire pot is overfilled with pellets. If a fire does occur,
turn the unit off, keep the lid closed until the flames are extinguished. Allow the unit to cool down
before moving. Thoroughly inspect and clean the unit inside the cooking chamber, lid and smoke
stack. Clean all internal cooking components, as well. The smoke stack and grease exhaust should
be inspected at least twice a year to determine when grease and/or creosote buildup has occurred.
Refer to the Care and Maintenance section for additional information.
Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas produced by burning gasoline, wood,
propane, charcoal or other fuel. Improperly ventilated appliances, particularly in a tightly sealed
or enclosed space, may allow carbon monoxide to accumulate to dangerous levels. Signs and
symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning may include: dull headache, weakness, dizziness, nausea
or vomiting, shortness of breath, confusion, blurred vision or loss of consciousness. Seek immediate
medical attention if any of these conditions exist while using or standing near this appliance.
Carbon monoxide poisoning can be made worse with drug use or alcohol consumption.
Carbon monoxide is especially toxic to mother and child during pregnancy, infants, the elderly,
smokers, and people with blood or circulatory system problems, such as anemia, or heart disease.
Error Codes - Refer to the Troubleshooting section (Page 29) for additional information.
