8. Patient and Skin Care
For optimum results, good priming of the veins is required. This is assisted by a slight degree
(approximately 15 degrees) of leg dependency down. Avoid leg elevation unless using an T.E.D.™
anti-embolism stocking, and do not let the limb get cool.
For optimum DVT prophylaxis, it is recommended the A-V Impulse foot compression system be
used with T.E.D. anti-embolism stockings on moderate and high risk patients.
As with any treatment technique it is important to check regularly according to hospital
protocol, for patient comfort and compliance and to pay particular attention to skin care and
hygiene.
Check Regularly:
• Impulse is felt directly under the arch of the foot.
• Impad cover fits snugly and comfortably.
• Skin integrity (remove stocking/stockinette).
• Skin (color) redness.
9. Indications For Use
The proper duration of use for each indication is subject to clinical judgement.
Indication
Circulation Enhancement
Relieves circulatory disorders secondary to
diminished blood flow, such as ischaemia secondary
to peripheral vascular disease.
Deep Vein Thrombosis Prophylaxis and
Pulmonary Embolism Prophylaxis
Use for effective prophylaxis for patients at risk
of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary
embolism (PE), including providing pre-intra and
post-operative prophylaxis for DVT and PE.
Acute Edema
Reduces acute edema, such as elevated
compartment pressures, edema secondary to
trauma and/or surgical procedures, post-bypass graft
edema, post operative edema secondary to venus
ligation or venous stripping and edema secondary
to sprains, strains and sports related injuries of the
extremity.
Chronic Edema
Reduces chronic edema.
Extremity Pain Associated with Incident,
Trauma or Surgery
Relieves pain, increase range of motion and limb
mobility, and expedites return of function following
trauma or surgery.
Venous Stasis/Venous Insufficiency
Treats venous stasis, venous insufficiency and
varicose veins.

Recommended Guidelines
For temporary impairments such as temporary
trauma or disease conditions, continuous use until
the condition is resolved.
For chronic impairments, daily use depending on the
severity of the patient's condition and activity level.
Continuous use until the patient is fully ambulatory
and weight bearing (not just mobilized).
Continuous use until edema is reduced.
As required, but at least 4 hours per day.
Continuous use until severity of pain is reduced or
physician recommends alternative therapy.
For temporary impairments such as temporary
trauma or disease conditions, continuous use until
condition is resolved.
For chronic impairments, daily use depending on the
severity of the patient's condition and activity level.
A-V Impulse System
Indication
Lymphedema
Reduces lymphedema, including lymphedema
secondary to trauma and/or surgery and reduces
or controls chronic lymphedema, including post-
paralytic lymphedema due to stroke or spinal cord
injury.
Leg Ulcers
Assists healing of cutaneous ulcers.
10. Fitting the Single Patient Use Impad Cover(s
Warning: The consumables designed for use with the A-V Impulse foot
compression system are single patient use. The transfer of
consumables between patients may result in cross infection or
unexpected consumable failure due to extended use.
Caution: Check the skin for irritation and use additional padding according to
clinical judgement.
The Impad cover should be fitted following the instructions supplied
with the pad.
It is recommended that Impad covers are fitted to the patient in pairs.
Caution: For full Impad cover life do not walk or weight bear on the Impad
cover when the controller is impulsing and only inflate when fitted to
the foot. Ensure that the Impad cover is placed directly under the arch
of the foot.

1.
For improved efficacy, apply T.E.D. anti-embolism stocking or
stockinette over the foot and ankle as required. Avoid wrinkles.
2. Select the appropriate Impad foot cover. Red = LEFT. Blue = RIGHT.
Place foot centrally on top of inflation pad as shown by the
graphics on the Impad cover. The inlet tube should be on the
medial side (inside) of the foot.
CAUTION: The inflation pad must be placed directly under the arch of

the foot.
3. Wrap the medial side (inside) of the foot cover over the top of the
foot and then overlap the lateral side (outside) of the cover and
secure with the fastener strap. Next, wrap the rear strap around
the back of the heel and secure with the fastener tab. Check that
the foot cover is fitted snugly and the patient is comfortable.
4. For best results make sure the foot is BELOW the level of the heart.
