Safe Torque Off
Installation Guide
1.4 Wiring and Configuring STO
Safe Torque Off (STO) is designed to stop the drive in emergency stop situations. It can be used for asynchronous, synchronous, and
permanent magnet motors. When the STO function is activated, the drive issues an alarm, trips the unit, and coasts the motor to a
stop. STO is activated by removing the voltage at terminal 37 of the drive. Installing Safe Stop 1 requires that:
The drive is connected to an external safety device which provides a safe delay.
The external safety device fulfills Cat./PL or SIL when connected to terminal 37.
WIRING STO TO AN OPTION
If the drive is configured with a functional extension option that uses STO, wire the safe output terminal of the option to terminal
37 of the drive. For more information, see the appropriate documentation:

1.
Locate the control terminals 37 and 12 or 13. The Illustration section shows the jumper wire for all drives except FCD 302
(A) and the jumper wire in an FCD 302 drive (B).
2.
Remove the yellow jumper wire between control terminals 37 and 12 or 13. Cutting or breaking the yellow jumper is not
sufficient to avoid short-circuiting.
3.
Connect the external safety device to terminal 37 (STO) and either terminal 12 or 13 (24 V DC). See the Safe Torque Off (STO)
Operating Guide for connection and application examples.
4.
Configure how the drive should resume operation after Safe Torque Off has been activated. If using the automatic restart
(b), ensure that all requirements according to ISO 12100 paragraph 6.3.3.2.5 are fulfilled.
-
a.
(Default) To require a reset signal to be sent to the drive to manually restart operation, select parameter 5-19 Ter-
minal 37 Safe Stop = [1] Safe Stop Alarm.
-
b.
To automatically resume operation after 24 V DC is reapplied to terminal 37, select parameter 5-19 Terminal 37
Safe Stop = [3] Safe Stop Warning.
5.
Perform a successful commissioning test. See
1.5 Commissioning Test
A successful test of the Safe Torque Off (STO) function is required after the initial installation and after each subsequent change to
the installation or application involving the STO. There are 2 types of commissioning tests based on whether the STO parameter is
set for manual restart or automatic restart. For more information on the STO parameter, see Parameter 5-19 Terminal 37 Safe Stop in
the programming guide.
(Test M) Parameter 5-19 Terminal 37 Safe Stop = [1] Safe Stop Alarm.
(Test A) Parameter 5-19 Terminal 37 Safe Stop = [3] Safe Stop Warning.

M/A
Power on the drive.
M/A
Verify that no safety faults are present.
M/A
Start the motor.
M/A
Without interrupting the mains supply, remove the 24 V DC voltage supply to terminal 37 using the safety
device.
M/A
Verify that the motor coasts. Note that this may take some time.
M/A
If a mechanical brake is connected, verify that the brake activates.
M/A
Verify that Alarm 68 Safe Stop or Warning 68 Safe Stop is shown on the control panel or in the event log.
