Instructions for building the MC4 connector
(if not already pre-assembled)
(1) Use a 1/4" wire stripper to remove the insulation from the end of the cable that is to be con-
nected to the MC4 connector. Be careful not to kink or cut into the wire.
(2) Feed the bare wire into the crimping area (posn. 6) of the metallic mating contact and
crimp it with special crimping pliers. If no crimping pliers are available the wire can be sol-
dered into the contact.
(3) Feed the metallic mating contact with the crimped wire through the housing nut and the
rubber bushing (posn. 3) and into the insulated housing, until the metal pin is firmly seated in
the housing.
(4) Pull the housing nut (posn. 3) firmly onto the connector housing. When the nut is tightened,
the inner rubber socket compresses around the cable's outer jacket, creating a watertight
seal.
Installation instructions for the MC4 connector
Push the two connector pairs together so that both the locking lugs on the MC4 socket con-
nector (posn. 7) match the two corresponding locking slots on the MC4 connector (posn. 8).
When both connectors are coupled together, slide the locking lugs into the locking slots and
secure them.
To decouple both connectors, press on the ends of the locking lugs (posn. 7), when they ap-
pear in the open locking slot (posn. 8), to release the locking mechanism and pull the connec-
tors apart.
!
CAUTION: Make sure that there is no current flowing through it when you try to pull them
apart.
Connecting the solar panel to the charge controller
IMPORTANT: Do not connect the solar panel to the solar charge controller until the solar
charge controller is fully connected to the 12 volt battery.
CAUTION: High voltage currents may be present on the output wiring of the solar panel. Solar
!
panels produce current when exposed to light. Be cautious and avoid touching conductors in
the system circuit to avoid electric shock.
There is a positive PV cable and a negative PV cable going out from the solar panel. Each wire
must be long enough to reach the charge controller and the end of the wire must be stripped
by approx. 5 mm (0.2"), as shown below.
Insert the stripped end of the extension cable into the corresponding connection on the
charge controller. The positive PV wire is connected to the positive connection (marked with
PV "+") on the charge controller and the negative PV wire to the negative connection (marked
with PV "-") on the charge controller.
