REMOVAL
Warning: Engines with variable valve timing: Mark camshafts, camshaft sprockets, camshaft
adjusters and related camshaft drive system components (as applicable) with chalk or paint prior to
removal or dismantling to assist alignment on installation.
1. Remove crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.
2. Turn crankshaft in direction of engine rotation until crankshaft timing pin can be installed.
3. Ensure crankshaft sprocket keyway at 6 o'clock position. Note: If crankshaft sprocket keyway at 9
o'clock position, replace drive plate.
4. Ensure groove in rear of camshafts positioned as shown.
5. Remove RH bank timing chain tensioner and tensioner blade.
6. Slacken bolts of each RH bank camshaft adjuster.
7. Remove RH bank camshaft adjusters and timing chain.
8. Remove LH bank timing chain tensioner and tensioner blade.
9. Slacken bolts of each LH bank camshaft adjuster.
10. Remove LH bank camshaft adjusters and timing chain.
Note: Crankshaft sprocket friction washers MUST be replaced.
INSTALLATION (Part 1)
1. Ensure crankshaft timing pin correctly fitted.
2. Ensure crankshaft sprocket keyway at 6 o'clock position.
3. Ensure groove in rear of camshafts positioned as shown.
4. Install camshaft turning tools to front of LH bank camshafts.
5. Install camshaft alignment tool to rear of LH bank camshafts.
6. Ensure camshaft alignment tool engages in end of camshafts. Secure tool with bolts. Finger
tighten bolts.
7. Rock camshafts slightly to ensure camshaft alignment tool located correctly.
8. Remove camshaft turning tools.
9. Install camshaft turning tools to front of RH bank camshafts.
10. Install camshaft alignment tool to rear of RH bank camshafts.
11. Ensure camshaft alignment tool engages in end of camshafts. Secure tool with bolts. Finger
tighten bolts.
12. Rock camshafts slightly to ensure camshaft alignment tool located correctly.
13. Lock LH and RH bank timing chain tensioners in retracted position.
Note: There are two types of tensioner.
14. Tensioner - type A:
-
Push plunger into tensioner body in direction of arrow.
-
Insert a suitable pin into tensioner body to lock tensioner plunger in position.
15. Tensioner - type B:
-
Turn tensioner pawl fully clockwise.

Push plunger into tensioner body in direction of arrow
-
Turn tensioner pawl fully anti-clockwise.
-
Insert a suitable pin into tensioner body to lock tensioner plunger in position.
