10. LABELING
Equipment should be labeled with a label indicating that it has been removed from service and
emptied of refrigerant. The label must be dated and signed.
Make sure the equipment has labels indicating that the equipment contains flammable
refrigerant.
11. RECOVERY
When emptying refrigerant from a system, whether for repair work or decommissioning, it is
recommended that all refrigerants be drained safely. When transferring refrigerant into cylinders,
be sure to use only suitable refrigerant recovery cylinders.
Make sure that the correct number of cylinders to hold the total system charge are available. All
cylinders to be used are designated for the recovered refrigerant and labeled for that refrigerant
(i.e., special cylinders for the recovery of refrigerant). Cylinders must be fitted with a pressure
relief valve and associated shut-off valves in good working order. Empty recovery bottles are
disposed of and, if possible, cooled before recovery.
Recovery equipment should be in good working order with a set of equipment instructions
available and should be suitable for the recovery of flammable refrigerants.
In addition, a set of calibrated scales must be available and in good working order. Hoses must
be complete with disconnected fittings without leaks and in good condition. Before using the
recovery machine, make sure that it is in good working order, properly maintained, and that all
associated electrical components are sealed to prevent ignition if refrigerant is released. Consult
the manufacturer if in doubt.
The recovered refrigerant should be returned to the refrigerant supplier in the appropriate
recovery cylinder, and the corresponding waste transfer ticket should be prepared. Do not mix
refrigerants in the recovery units and in particular in the bottles. If compressors or compressor oils
need to be disposed of, make sure they have been vented to an acceptable level to ensure that
flammable refrigerant does not remain in the lubricant. The evacuation process should be done
before returning the compressor to the suppliers. Only an electric heater of the compressor body
should be
used to speed up this process. When oil is drained from a system, it must be done safely.
ii) COMPETENCE OF SERVICE STAFF
→General
Special training, in addition to the usual equipment repair procedures
refrigerants, is necessary when equipment containing flammable refrigerants is affected.
In many countries, this training is provided by national training organizations accredited to teach
relevant national skill standards that may be defined in legislation.
The skills acquired must be documented by a certificate.
→Training
The training should include the following:
• Information on the explosion potential of flammable refrigerants indicating that flammable
products can be dangerous when handled carelessly.
• Information on potential ignition sources, especially those that are not obvious, including
lighters, light switches, vacuum cleaners, electric heaters.
• Information on the various security concepts:
- Lack of ventilation (see clause GG.2): The safety of the device does not depend on the
ventilation of the housing. Switching off the device or opening the housing has no significant effect
