Gasoline
Use automotive gasoline(unleadedor low leadedto minimizecombus-
tionchamberdeposits)with a minimumof 87 octane.Gasolinewith
up to 10%ethanolor 15%MTBE(MethylTertiaryButyl Ether)canbe
used. Neverusean oil/gasolinemixtureor dirty gasoline.Avoidgetting
dirt, dust,or waterin thefuel tank. DO NOTuse E85gasoline.
Refuelin a well-ventilated areawith the engine stopped.Donot
smokeor allowflamesor sparksin the area wheretheengine is
refueledor wheregasolineisstored.
Do notoverfillthe fuel tank.After refueling,makesurethe tank
cap is closedproperlyand securely.
Be carefulnot to spillfuel when refueling.Spilledfuelor fuelvapor
may ignite. I f any fuel isspilled,makesurethe area isdry before
startingtheengine.
Avoidrepeatedor prolongedcontactwith skin or breathingof
vapor.
Useextremecarewhenhandlinggasoline.Gasolineis extremely
flammableand the vaporsare explosive.Neverfuelthe machine
indoors or whilethe engineishot or running.Extinguishcigarettes,
cigars,pipes andother sourcesof ignition.

Cleanaroundfuelfill beforeremovingcap to fuelto avoiddirt and
debrisfallingintofuel tank.
2.
A fuel levelindicatorislocatedinthe fuel tank. Filltank untilfuel
reachesthe fuel levelindictor.See Figure10 inset.Be carefulnot
to overfill.
Starting
The Engine
Alwayskeephandsand feetclear of movingparts.Do notuse a
pressurizedstartingfluid. Vaporsare flammable.
NOTE: Forlocationof all the enginecontrolsreferredto in this section,
referto Figure9 on page 12.
NOTE:Allowtheengineto warmup for a few minutesafter starting.
Theenginewill not developfull poweruntil it reachesoperating
temperatures.

Makecertain boththe augercontroland drivecontrolare in the
disengaged(released)position.
2.
Insertkey into slot.Makesureit snapsinto place.Do notattempt
to turnthe key.
NOTE:The enginecannotstart withoutthe key fully insertedintothe
switch.
Electric
Starter
Theoptionalelectricstarterisequippedwith a groundedthree-wire
powercord and plug,and isdesignedto operateon 120volt AC
householdcurrent.It mustbe usedwith a properlygroundedthree-
prong receptacleat all timesto avoidthe possibilityof electricshock.
Followall instructions carefullypriorto operatingthe electricstarter.
DO NOTuse electricstarterin the rain.
Determinethat yourhome'swiringis a three-wiregroundedsystem.
Ask a licensedelectricianif you are notcertain.
If you havea groundedthree-prongreceptacle,proceedas follows.
If you do not havethe properhousewiring, DONOT usethe electric
starterunder anyconditions.

Plugthe extensioncord intothe outlet locatedon the engine's
surface.Plug the otherend of extensioncord intoa three-prong
120-volt,grounded,AC outlet in a well-ventilated area.

Movethrottlecontrolto FAST(rabbit)_
position.
3.
Movechokecontrolto the CHOKEposition I,,o'1(coldengine
start). If engine iswarm,placechokecontrol in RUNposition.
4.
Pushprimerthree(3) times,makingsureto cover vent holewhen
pushing.If engineis warm,pushprimeronly once.Alwayscover
vent hole whenpushing.Coolweathermayrequireprimingto be
repeated.
5.
Pushstarterbuttonto startengine.Oncetheengine starts,im-
mediatelyreleasestarterbutton.Electricstarteris equippedwith
thermaloverloadprotection;systemwill temporarilyshutdownto
allow starterto cool if electricstarterbecomesoverloaded.
6.
As the enginewarms,slowlyrotatethechoke controlto RUN
position.Ifthe enginefalters, restartengineand runwith choke
controlat half-chokepositionfor a short periodof time,and then
slowlyrotatethe choke intoRUNposition.
7.
After engineis running,disconnectpowercord fromelectric
starter.Whendisconnecting, a lwaysunplugthe end at the wall
outlet beforeunpluggingthe oppositeend fromthe engine.
Recoil
Starter
Donot pull the starterhandlewhiletheengine running.
1. Movethrottlecontrolto FAST(rabbit)_j_
position.
2. Movechokecontrolto the CHOKEposition I,,_'l (coldengine
start). If engine iswarm,placechokecontrol in RUNposition.
3. Pushprimerthree(3) times,makingsureto cover vent holewhen
pushing.If engineis warm,pushprimeronly once.Alwayscover
vent hole whenpushing.Coolweathermayrequireprimingto be
repeated.
4. Pullgently on the starterhandleuntil it beginsto resist,thenpull
quicklyand forcefullyto overcomethe compression. E ngineshould
start. Donot releasethe handleand allowit to snapback.Return
ropeSLOWLYto originalposition.If required,repeatthis step.
5. As the enginewarms,slowlyrotatethechoke controlto RUNposi-
tion. Ifthe enginefalters,restartengineand run with chokecontrol
at half-chokepositionfor a shortperiod of time,and thenslowly
rotatethe choke intoRUNposition.
Toavoidunsupervisedengineoperation,neverleavethe machine
unattendedwith the enginerunning.Turnthe engineoff after useand
removeignition key.
