7. Starting motor testing

i A cover makes access to the starting-motor pinion and ring
gear impossible during testing.
A second start button (two-hand actuation) must be pressed
in addition every time a test is performed on the starter. For
this reason, it is not possible to work on the starting motor
during testing on the test bench.

7.1 Preparation

- Test starting motor pinion for damage (missing tooth, wear etc.).
- Test starting motor pinion module. It must match that of the ring
gear on the brake system (change if necessary).
- Fit the ring gear so that the bevelled teeth point away from the
starting motor pinion (slight meshing).
In the case of Bendix drive, the ring gear should therefore be
used on the brake unit.

- Screw the appropriate clamping flange (10/5) to the starting
motor (10/12) and fit it loosely in the clamping bracket (10/4).
- Turn the starting motor and the flange until the opening in the
pinion-end frame points towards the ring gear.
- Tighten the clamp claws (10/2).

i Secure small starting motor with a bracket. Starting motors
from approx. 4 kW must be secured with two clamping
brackets (Special accessories, order no. 1 687 960 027). As
a makeshift solution, it is possible to use the clamping bracket
(4/4) intended for clamping generators.
i For starting motors with a stator frame greater than 150 mm
to 180 mmtwo special clamping vees are required. (special
accessories part no. 1 688 000 249). Bring the vees onto the
biggest possible base. Arrange the vee and the clamping
bracket (10/6) on the pinion end as near as possible to the
pinion.
- Place vees (10/13) in the centre of the clamping table (10/8)
depending on the size of the starting motor.
- Push the clamping bracket (10/6) onto the clamping table (10/
8).
- Place the starting motor (10/12) in the two vees (10/13).
- Position the clamping bracket (10/6) over the vees.
- Manually tighten the clamping-bracket pinion (10/6).
! Do not use any foreign object in order to tighten the pinion.
