Sensor head and magnetic tape

The magnetic tape is not included in the scope
of delivery and must be ordered separately.
When selecting the magnetic tape, make sure
that the magnetic tape and sensor head are
compatible. This particularly applies to the
following:
Pole width
Reference points (see 3.4.2 and 3.4.3)
A complete technical description and installation
instructions for magnetic tapes can be found in
the document titled User's Guide – Magnetic
Tape (see Tab. 10-2 on page 30).
3.4.1

Reference point function

The reference point function makes it possible to move to
one or more positions within a machine, such as the
starting point.
Different variants are available.
More information describing the relationship
between the position signal and reference signal
is available in the document titled Interfaces for
BML Magnetically Coded Position Measuring
System (see Tab. 10-2 on page 30).
3.4.2
Sensor head without reference point function
or with pole-periodic reference point function
A single system consists of a sensor head and a magnetic
tape:
Sensor head:
• BML SF2-_ _0... (without reference point function)
• BML SF2-_ _2... (pole-periodic reference point
function)
Magnetic tape: BML TS_-_ _ _ 1-...

The sensor head of the variant without the reference point
function outputs only the changes in position via an
interface.

Magnetic tape with
incremental track
(no reference track)
With the pole-periodic reference point function, a reference
signal is also output with each magnetic pole, e.g. every 2
mm (pole width). The magnetic tape in this case does not
have an explicit reference track.
3.4.3

Sensor head with integrated reference sensor

For these variants the reference point positions are defined
by the magnetic tape.
The sensor head with the additional integrated reference
sensor outputs a reference signal as soon as the reference
sensor reaches a magnetically coded reference point on
the second track of the magnetic tape.
Single, double or fixed-periodic reference signal
A single system consists of a sensor head and a magnetic
tape:
Sensor head:
BML SF_-_ _1... (single or fixed-periodic signal)
Magnetic tape:
• BML TS_-_ _ _ R-_ _ _ _-_ _ _ _-XXXX
with a reference point (single signal)
• BML TS_-_ _ _ D-_ _ _ _-_ _ _ _-XXXX-YYYY
with two reference points (double signal)
• BML TS_-_ _ _ C-_ _ _ _-_ _ _ _-XXXX-YYYY
with periodic reference points (fixed-periodic signal)
