The need for maintenance or
N
repairs to the wheel brake system is
indicated when the engine is started
and the wheel brake cannot be
released.
If the wheel brake cannot be released
when the engine is running
The following causes are possible:

Maintenance on the wheel brake
system is needed
–
Repairs to the wheel brake system
are needed

To make that determination:
Press and hold the water shut off
N
button (1) for 3 seconds while the
machine is at idle
Pull the brake lever toward the front
N
handle and release it
If the wheel brake can be released this
way, the wheel brake system requires
maintenance. You may:
Complete the immediate task you
N
are working on before bringing the
machine to an authorized STIHL
servicing dealer for maintenance

This override procedure must be
repeated each time the machine is
started until the brake system has been
serviced. The first override is recorded in
the control unit memory.
WARNING
A brake requiring maintenance may not
operate properly and may not be
effective in reducing the risk of injury
from kickback. Do not delay in having
your machine inspected and maintained
by an authorized STIHL servicing
dealer. If completing the task requires
opening the guard to expose the top
portion of the cutting wheel, you should
immediately stop work and have the
machine serviced.
If the wheel brake cannot be released
using this procedure, the wheel brake
system needs to be repaired

Re-Tensioning the front V-ribbed belt
The V-ribbed belts are part of the wheel
brake system.
If one of the V-ribbed belt slips or
squeaks during acceleration or
operation, and the abrasive cutting
wheel either stops in the cut or there is a
loss of cutting performance, the front V-
ribbed belt must be re-tensioned or
serviced.

Remove the screw (1)

Remove the guard (2)

Undo the nut (3). The front V-ribbed
N
belt (4) is tensioned.
Pull the brake lever (5) toward the
N
front handle and hold it
Turn the belt pulley (6) three times
N
in a clockwise direction (one
complete revolution). The
pretension will then be evenly
distributed.
Release the brake lever
N
Using a torque wrench, tighten the
N
nut (3) to 177 lbf. in. (20 Nm).
WARNING
To ensure proper activation of the wheel
brake system, tighten the nut (3) to the
specified torque. If you are unable to
ensure the proper torque value, have the
front V-ribbed belt retensioned by an
authorized STIHL servicing dealer.
