For M51 engines only, when re-using timing chains which have covered more than 12,500 miles (20,000 km), DT.4412 Plate should have a clearance, on
one side, between the cylinder head and Plate. This clearance corresponds to a 2 degree angle and is checked using a 4.5mm.feeler gauge.
10
DT.4413 Tensioner Retaining Pins (Pair)
Both Tensioner Pins are used to retain the lower chain tensioner when removing it and the tensioner arm, and to facilitate removal of the timing chain, injection
pump, timing case etc.
WARNING: Tensioner pistons will be under spring pressure. DO NOT remove pins until re-installed.
11
DT.4415 Tensioner Lever
DT.4415 Tensioner Lever is used to re-act on the tensioner to remove tension off the chain. The Lever is positioned inside the timing chain cover and used to
apply leverage to the chain tensioner bow to depress the chain tensioner.
The access plug is removed to allow Pin DT.4413 to be inserted in order to 'lock' the chain tensioner in position away from the chain.
Section 2:
PETROL ENGINES
M40 (BELT) and M43 (CHAIN DRIVE) engines
-Refer to Application Chart for details of models/engines
The BMW M40 petrol engine has a timing belt. The later variant M43 engine utilizes a Timing Chain. These engines require the following timing tools from
DT.BMW.
DT.4146-2 Crankshaft/Flywheel TDC Locking Pin
DT.4146-1 Camshaft Setting Plate
1
DT.4146-2 Crankshaft TDC – Flywheel Locking Pin
DT.4146-2 Pin is inserted to 'lock' the fl ywheel to position the crankshaft at TDC. A timing hole is provided in the cylinder block. DT.4146-2 passes through this
hole and in to a datum hole in the fl ywheel.
NOTE: These holes can become corroded/constricted and may require cleaning out to enable the Pin to be inserted.
12
DT.4146-1 Camshaft Setting Plate
DT.4146-1 is used on both M40 and M43 engines
M40 - Timing Belt
Turn crankshaft in the normal direction of rotation until piston in the 1st cylinder is at TDC. Insert Pin DT.4146-2 into fl ywheel, and locate Setting Plate
DT.4146-1 on the fl ats at front of camshaft, to 'lock' camshaft.
Loosen camshaft sprocket retaining bolt, release belt tension and remove the timing belt.
When installing a new timing belt turn camshaft sprocket clockwise to 'stop' and fi t timing belt, Gauge to ensure manufacturer's specifi ed tension is achieved.
Tighten tensioner roller and camshaft sprocket bolts.
M43 Timing Chains
To check correct crankshaft and camshaft/valve timing position the crankshaft must be positioned at TDC using DT.4146-2 Locking Pin (the crank sprocket
keyway should be at 12-0-clock position).
The camshaft position is checked by fi tting DT.4146-1 Setting Plate on to the camshaft and ensuring it makes full contact with both sides of the camshaft cover gasket face.
Timing Adjustment to the camshaft can be achieved by relieving the chain tension and slackening the camshaft sprocket bolts. The arrow on the sprocket should
is point vertically upwards with the bolts in the centre of the elongated slots in the sprocket. Ensure Camshaft Setting Plate fi ts correctly onto cover gasket face,
re-apply tension and tighten cam sprocket bolts.
M42, M50 and M52 CHAIN DRIVE – TWIN CAMS
-Refer to Application Chart for details of models/engines
This range of BMW twin cam petrol engines require the following timing tools from DT.BMW DT.4146-2 Crankshaft/Flywheel TDC Locking Pin
DT.4309 Camshaft Setting Plate
DT.4311 Tensioner Retaining Pin Set
DT.4323 Tension Pre-Load Tool
DT.4312 VANOS Engagement Wrench
The VANOS Units (variable valve control system) requires additional tools. The Single Vanos system (on Inlet camshaft) requires the use of DT.4312 Engagement Wrench.
