3.3. SELECTION OF ENAMEL AND DENTINE SHADES
Select shades before drying. Shades are best determined under bright daylight or daylight lamps with the
COMPONEER BRILLIANT Shade Guide. Select the dentine shade in the first step and then the enamel shade
in a second step. If the patient requests a lighter tooth colour all the anteriors should be restored.
NOTE
- The BRILLIANT NG composite range offers all applicable dentine shades for all clinical cases when selecting
darker dentine shades.
(1) Selection of tint
- Light selection in accordance with patient preference
- The tint is most marked in the cervical region of the third
- Eye-object distance 30 cm
- Hold composite sample above or below the tooth that is to be restored
- Moist or wet composite sample compared to wet tooth
- Grey-blue or natural background
- Observation time max. 5 s
- Blue area to relieve eyes
- Repeat comparison three times
(2) Selection of colour intensity and opacity
- Cervical region for dentine 'shade" or dentine mass
- Incisor region for enamel 'shade' or enamel mass
(3) Selection of brightness
- Eye-object distance 60 cm
After selection of the base mass of dentine and enamel the dentine sample is placed in the enamel guide
to confirm the selection of masses by superimposing the two materials. This serves to check that the cor-
rect shade is selected. A drop of water applied between the two components of the colour selection scale
optimises the optical reproduction.
