is recommended. It is, however, possible to use a fall-
arrest harness, if this type of harness is being worn by
the operator needing to be rescued.
For the entire duration of the rescue operation,
direct or indirect visual contact, or another means
of communication, must be maintained between the
rescuer and the others persons involved in the rescue.
IMPORTANT: During rescue operations, the
winching system must be used exclusively for
rescue purposes, and must not be used to lift loads.
To perform the rescue lifting operation, turn the winder
in the direction indicated by the arrow M to recover the
operator by raising him or her.

DANGER
Load lifting operation using the caRol™ winch:
All load lifting operations using the caRol™ winch
are prohibited if they are performed at the same
time as a rescue lifting operation or at the same
time as rope access work.
When performing rescue operations, the winching
system must be exclusively dedicated to rescue
operations.

6. Prohibited use

The following are strictly prohibited:
• installing or using a caRol™ rescue winch without
being authorised, trained and recognised as being
competent to use the device or, for anyone not meeting
these requirements, without being supervised by an
operator who is authorised, trained and recognised as
being competent to use the device.
• using a caRol™ winch if any of its markings are not
legible.
• installing or using a caRol™ winch on which the
preliminary checks have not been carried out.
• using a caRol™ winch on which a periodic inspection
has not been carried out during the previous 12
months or less in accordance with the he laws or
codes of practice in the country of use by a technician
capable of authorising its continued use in writing.
• installing a caRol™ winch on a Tractel
on which a periodic inspection has not been carried
out during the previous 12 months by a technician
capable of authorising its continued use in writing.
• using a caRol™ winch for any application other than
the rescue lifting of persons.
• securing a caRol™ winch using any means other than
the leg bracket specially designed for the tracpode™.
• using a caRol™ winch in any way that contradicts the
information given in section "14. Service life".
• using a caRol™ winch to rescue more than 1 operator
at any one time.
• using a caRol™ winch to rescue an operator whose
total mass, including equipment and tools, exceeds
150 kg.
• using a caRol™ winch to support a load of between
100 kg and 150 kg (total mass of the operator
requiring rescue plus his/her equipment and tools)
if any component of the rescue system has a lower
working load limit.
• using a caRol™ winch in a highly corrosive or
explosive atmosphere.
• using a caRol™ winch outside the temperature range
specified in this manual.
• using a caRol™ winch if there is obstacle in the path
of the rescue.
• using a caRol™ winch if the operator is not in good
physical condition.
• using a caRol™ winch if the safety function provided
by any of the associated items is affected by the safety
function of another item or interferes with it.
