8.4 Indication elements
Green LED
The green "CHARGING" LED lights up as soon as sunlight is available for charging the
battery. The LED is off when it is dark.
As the SunSaver charge controller charges the battery using a pulse width modulation
method with constant voltage, the battery is always supplied with a certain amount of power.
Although the charging current is very low, when the battery reaches the fully charged state
the green LED is on (during the day) and thus indicates correct operation of the charge
controller.
Red LED
The SunSaver charge controller with automatic load disconnection (LVD / low voltage
disconnection) has a red "LOAD DISCONNECT" LED. As soon as the charging state of the
battery falls below the low voltage disconnection setpoint, the load is disconnected and the
red LED lights up. This indicates that the controller has disconnected the load to protect the
battery against total discharge and possible damage.
If, after a certain charging time, the battery reaches 40 to 50% of its nominal power, the load
is automatically reconnected and the red LED goes out.
8.5 Operation
With all fuses installed, the system should operate normally. During normal operation,
depending on weather conditions, the battery voltage will vary from approximately 23.0 to
28.6 volts. If the battery voltage falls below 23.0 volts, the controller will go into LVD (Low
Voltage Disconnect), and open the load connections. It will then let the battery recharge up
to approximately 25.2 V before reconnecting the loads to the battery.
During normal operation, the battery voltage should not change rapidly. During the day as it
is being charged after a night of discharge, the voltage will climb slowly up to the charge
regulation set point. Depending on the present and previous sunlight conditions, the
batteries may or may not reach the full charge regulation set point during the day.
