2. Capsule and Manifold Design
Two capsule sizes, BV800R and BV5600R, are to be used with the 3M
System holders. The BV800R capsule has 0.23 m
BV5600R capsule has 1.6 m

male and one female adaptor is attached to opposing sides of each BV800R and BV5600R lenticle
stacks. The male and female adaptors mate with the adaptors on the manifolds and the neighboring
capsules. The o-rings on the adaptors on the outer most lenticles provide a secure seal between the
molded mating features of the manifolds and neighboring capsules. The manifolds have imprinted
information indicating top/bottom manifolds and inlet/outlet connection ports. The BV5600R
capsule shells have a self-guiding locking mechanism for a fast, easy and robust capsule-to-capsule
connection. A set of manifolds is required for connecting the capsules to external components of
the purifi cation train. The manifold set ensures the entire purifi cation process is fast and clean. An
extra pair of manifolds is required to perform two-stage fi ltration within one holder assembly. Only
use Polyphenylene Oxide/Polystyrene based manifold sets.

3M off ers two holders; Pilot-scale (model 16EZA) and Production-scale (model 16EZB) holders.
The pilot-scale holder can accommodate from one to four BV800R capsules or one BV5600R
capsule. Either single-stage or two-stage (BV800R only) purifi cation can be performed within the
same pilot scale holder. In a two stage purifi cation train, a 3M Zeta Plus fi lter is used as the fi rst
stage. The production scale holder can accommodate up to seven BV5600R capsules. Similarly,
either a single-stage or two-stage purifi cation can be performed within the same production
scale holder, wherein the 1st stage is 3M Zeta Plus fi lter(s).
4. Single Stage Purifi cation Instructions for Pilot-Scale (16EZA) and
Production-Scale (16EZB) Holder
4.A. Pilot-Scale Holder (16EZA) Loading Instructions for Single Stage Purifi cation
Loading is performed in front of the holder (two stop pins are located in the back of the holder base).
1. Ensure the holder is on a level surface and lock the four swivel casters.
2. Turn the hand wheel counterclockwise to move the movable end plate upward to desired height.
3. Place a bottom manifold onto the base with the inlet and outlet facing forward, the back side of
the manifold touching the two stop pins, and the manifold stops positioned between the support
rods. The female connector of the manifold will face upward when the bottom manifold is in
correct orientation.
4. Rotate the manifold to desired location within the support rods.
5. Lubricate all o-rings using water or process fl uid.
6. Place one BV5600R capsule on top of the manifold with the female connector facing upward.
7. If a BV800R capsule is used, place one BV800R capsule on top of the bottom manifold with the
female connector facing upward.
