The four adjustment sliders next to the control sticks adjust the trim of the helicopter. These
controls are used to compensate and adjust the "stable" position of the helicopter.
Adjusting the trim is something that takes
some practice - in fact, you could say it's half
the skill required to fly the helicopter. Just take
it easy at first, and don't get too frustrated -
it turns out that flying a helicopter is actually
really difficult (who'd have thought it?) and
is probably the reason we make sure real-life
helicopter pilots actually know what they're
doing with licences and tests and whatnot.
There are four trim controls:
1: Throttle Trim
2: Rotation Trim
3: Forward/Reverse Trim
4: Left/Right Strafe Trim
5: The Rotation Trim Fine Tune
The center position of the trim control is meant to be the neutral position. In theory setting
the trim to the center should be correct... however, in the real world, one cog probably has a little
more grease on it than another, or the helicopter is one gram heavy on the front-end because some
dust got in there. The neutral position will be near the center, so set it there and adjust as necessary.
How to adjust the trim:
The easiest way to adjust the trim is to do it before you really take flight.
Set all trim controls to the default (middle) position. Remember to also set the Rotation Fine Tune
to the default (middle) position, too!
Turn the helicopter on and pair the remote.
Gently increase the throttle until the helicopter is barely off the ground. Due to the ground effect
(see opposite) you can easily hover very close to the ground quite reliably.
First, ensure that the helicopter isn't moving forwards or backwards. Don't worry if it's rotating one way
or other, we'll set that in a moment.
If the helicopter is moving forwards or backwards, set the forward/reverse trim controls (3).
If the helicopter is moving left or right, set the left/right strafe trim controls (4).
Once the helicopter is stationary, then adjust the rotation trims.
Adjust the rotation trim (2). If the helicopter is turning right, move this left. If the helicopter is
turning left, adjust this to the right.
Adjust the fine rotation trim (5). It's hard to get the rotation exactly right using only the rotation
trim slider - it's just not fine enough.
Your helicopter should now be stable and maneouverable.
You might need to re-adjust the trim while flying. As the battery depletes, the power-to-weight ratio
of the helicopter will change slightly, and you might need to tweak some of the trims to compensate.
