GETTING STARTED
Compressor
Choose a compressor suitable for use with air brushes, a
compressor that can achieve 50 psi (3.45 BAR) should be ideal
for achieving all of the potential built into Matco's Air Brushes:
MABCR2, MABCR3 and MABBR2. A good starting pressure of
approximately 30-35 psi (2.07-2.45 BAR) may be suitable for
providing high-paint flow for background spray and at the same
time offering very controllable fine line detail performance.
ASSEMBLY AND PRE-TESTING
1. Attach the air hoses to the compressor and to the air brush.
(Use the adapter provided, if necessary.)
2. Adjust the air pressure between 30 and 45 psi (2.07 and 3.1
BAR). NEVER EXCEED 98 psi (6.76 BAR).
3. Check for leaking air from the compressor and hoses.
4. Place several drops of cleaner into the cup.
5. Point the air brush away from yourself.
6. Press down on the main lever #6;
this allows air flow through the air brush.
7. Pull back on the main lever to open the nozzle of the
air brush and rinse out any residual paint.
GENERAL OPERATION
Line set up spray
1. Depress the main lever #6 to start the air flow.
2. Position the air brush close to the surface 1/8 – 1/2" (3-
12mm) for fine line width; position the air brush away from
the surface 5/8 – 6" (16-150mm) for wide line
and background spraying.
3. Vary the amount of paint flow by maneuvering
the main lever position.
Stippling
Matco's airbrushes are made to produce a wide variety of
stippling textures. Increase the distance between the airbrush
and the painted surface to control the lines width. Increasing the
air pressure will affect the spray width as well. The maximum
useable line width is approximately 2 ¼" (57mm). A very narrow
line can be produced by carefully removing the needle cap #1
and by moving the airbrush closer to the surface.
CAUTION
The needle and nozzle are extremely delicate. Even
a slight bend on the tip of the needle can have
negative effects on the spray pattern.
Lower air pressure will give you coarse stipple where as higher
air pressure will provide a fine stipple effect. Paint thickness will
also affect the stipple texture.

Air Pressure
Working pressure will generally vary depending on what kind of
work is being done, as well as what textures might be desired. The
thickness of the paint and your various desired characteristics will
also affect your choice of pressures. As a general rule, larger
amounts or thicker paints will be sprayed with higher pressures. A
good starting pressure of 35 psi (2.41 BAR) is recommended in
order to take full advantage of Matco's air brushes.
Paint Preparation
Proper paint preparation, including thinning with an appropriate
solvent and filtering with a fine nylon mesh is important. It is
best to prepare paint relatively thin and make more passes
across the work as needed to achieve the desired result. This
will improve the work quality, as well as decrease clean up time
spent on your air brush.
Safety Tips
• Always use your air brush in a well ventilated area.
• Use the appropriate protection gear, e.g. respirator and
goggles, to safely filter out paint vapors and to prevent paint
contact with eyes.
• Never use air pressures that exceed the airbrushes
limits 98 psi (6.76 BAR).
• Do not spray solvent-based (flammable) paints
near fire hazards.
Cleaning the Airbrush between Colors
1. Pour out any unused color from the cup.
2. Rinse the cup with the appropriate cleaner.
3. Spray cleaner until the spray becomes clear.
4. Add the next color to the cup.
5. Repeat cleaning procedure when finished.
Before/After Each Session
(or Anytime Air Brush is Clogged)
Spray water, or the appropriate paint cleaner through the air brush
to make sure the air brush is working properly. If necessary, follow
the instructions on the next page to clean the needle.
Cleaning the airbrush in this manner helps clean the paint
passage, the nozzle and the needle thoroughly.
In very rare occasions, the nozzle #3 must be removed during
cleaning or maintenance. Please be extra cautious and use the
tool provided when performing this action.
Cleaning the Needle
1. Remove the handle #16-1 and
2. Pull the needle #8 out carefully.
3. Wipe clean the needle tip using a soft cloth damped with solvent.
4. Insert the needle back to the air brush through the main lever #6
5. Hand-tighten the needle lock screw and the handle.
6. Test the trigger mechanism for smooth needle movement.
7. Periodically, you may need to lubricate the needle and the main

and especially through the needle packing screw #10.

lever with a small amount of Vaseline. (NOTE: Excess lubrication
might cause clogging at the needle tip and the nozzle #3.)
