To remove the G-tube, simply deflate the balloon with a syringe and gently pull out the tube until the tip is
out of the stoma; force should not be used.
If the balloon cannot be deflated, clean the deflation port with warm water and retry. If this is
unsuccessful, it is recommended that any further attempt to remove the tube be carried out under
medical instruction, preferably in a hospital setting.
It is not recommended to:
1. Fill the balloon to bursting as this can cause trauma
2. Cut the G-tube at skin level as this can cause obstruction
3. Empty the balloon via the tube with a needle or syringe as this cannot be performed with certainty
and poses significant risk to the patient
In case of accidental removal: immediately introduce a new G-tube (of the same Charrière) to keep the
fistula open. Inflation of the balloon may only be done under medical supervision or endoscopic control
to prevent damage of the fistula.
Flushing and Syringe use policy
- Use a syringe of at least 20ml for flushing the tube and always flush in a controlled manner.
