Troubleshooting

Risk of electrical shock. Unplug the pump before touching it or servicing it.
Symptom
Probable Cause(s)
Pump is not plugged in.
Blown fuse or tripped breaker.
Low line voltage.
Pump won't start
or run.
Defective motor.
Defective float switch.
Clogged or jammed Impeller.
Obstructed float.
Backflow of water from piping.
Pump starts and
stops too often.
Faulty float switch.
Defective float switch.
Restricted discharge (obstacle or
ice in the piping).
Pump won't shut
off.
Obstructed float.
Restricted intake screen.
Low line voltage.
Debris caught in the impeller.
Worn or defective parts or plugged
Pump operates
impeller.
but delivers little
or no water.
Check valve installed without vent
hole.
Restricted intake screen.
Check valve is installed either
backward or upside down.

Corrective Action(s)
Make sure the pump is plugged into a proper
outlet.
Detect and repair the cause of the failure. Then
replace the fuse with a fuse of proper size or reset
breaker.
Check the size of the wiring on the circuit feeding
the pump and from the main switch on the
property. If everything is OK, contact your power
company or hydro authority.
Replace the pump.
Replace the float switch.
If the impeller won't turn, unplug the pump,
remove the lower pump body, and locate the
source of the binding. Replace the impeller if
necessary.
Move the pump in the sump or remove the
obstruction.
Install or replace the check valve.
Replace the float switch.
Replace the float switch.
Unplug the pump, remove it from the sump, and
clean the pump and piping.
Move the pump in the sump or remove the
obstruction.
Unplug the pump, remove it from the sump, and
clean the intake screen and impeller.
If the voltage is below 110 volts, check the size of
the wiring from the main switch on the property.
If OK, contact your power company or hydro
authority.
Remove the pump and clean out the impeller.
Clean the impeller if it's plugged; replace the
impeller if necessary; otherwise replace the pump.
Drill a 1/8" (3mm) dia. hole between the pump
discharge and the check valve (1-2" above the
pump discharge and below the waterline).
Remove the pump and clean out the intake screen.
Be sure the check valve is installed correctly (the
flow arrow should point away from the pump).
