– They are completely maintenance free.
– They use a recombining system to prevent hydrogen and oxygen, which are usually lost in a conventional lead-acid
battery (especially in heavy applications), from being discharged.
– It can be virtually used in any position. However, face-down installation is not recommended.
– Connection should be twisted, and batteries should be periodically cleaned.
SLI (Starting Lighting and Ignition) Batteries
SLI batteries, used for heavy transport vehicles, vehicles fitted with large diesel engines, can often be defined as
COMMERCIAL batteries. They should be very powerful and much more robust than car batteries. They are designed
to provide pick-up for starting, lighting and injection, namely three basic functions which batteries are supposed to
perform in all standard vehicles; once the vehicle has been started, the consumed charge (usually accounting for 2%
to 5%) is restored by the alternator and the battery remains completely charged. These batteries are not designed to
be discharged below 50%. Under that level the plates might get damaged and the battery life reduced to a significant
extent.
The above-mentioned batteries are specially designed for services on cars and lorries whose voltage is controlled by
an electrical system.
Deep Cycle Batteries
Deep cycle batteries, used for marine applications, golf carts, forklift trucks and electrical vehicles, are designed to be
fully discharged before being recharged. Because in the recharging process excessive heat can bend the plates, the
plates used for these batteries are thick and sturdy compared to those used in conventional batteries, which are fitted
with thinner plates with a larger surface, for a higher current capacity to be achieved.
Standard batteries generally die after 30,150 deep cycles; whereas they can last thousands of cycles under normal
usage conditions (for which they are designed, 2-5% discharge).
If the batteries used for deep discharge are used for automotive applications, they should be oversized by
approximately 20% to make up for their lower power supply capacity.
State of Health
It means how much battery capacity is left, in percentage, compared to capacity as originally marked for that battery.
State of Charge
It means what percentage of the battery is currently charged.
CCA
The ampere current a new, fully charged battery can supply non-stop for 30 seconds, while preventing terminal voltage
from falling below 1.2 V per cell, after it has been cooled to 0 OC and kept at that temperature. This measurement
allows the pickup current the battery can supply under winter conditions to be determined.
Ampere-hour (Ah)
This is a unit of measurement for electrical capacity. A current of one ampere for one hour involves supplying or
receiving an ampere hour of electricity. Current multiplied by time in hours is equivalent to ampere-hours.
