647882 – 30pc Alternator Pulley Install/Removal Set
The Powerbuilt Master Alternator Pulley Kit is designed to Remove and Install Overrunning Alternator Pulleys (OAP) and Overrunning Alternator Decoupler
Pulleys (OAD) both of which use a one way clutch design (OWC). Otherwise known by the collective term Alternator Decoupler Pulleys (ADP). The Powerbuilt
30pc master kit includes all of the most commonly needed tools to remove pulleys from most major Alternator brands including Ina, Gates & Litens, and
eliminates the hassle of having to shop around for hard-to-find tools. This set includes varying lengths of Hex, Star & Spline (triple square) bits and bit socket
configurations allowing you to remove and replace the Alternator Decouple Pulleys without having to remove the entire alternator in most cases.
Inspecting the Decoupler Pulleys:
1. Remove the cover cap if necessary and inspect the condition of the pulley. If metal shavings or other indications of wear are present then the pulley should
be replaced.
2. Identify the design of the Pulley Center and find the appropriate tool to fit. [Major types include; spline and hex. NOTE: Others types also exist.] (1)
3. Insert the correct tool adapter into the Pulley Center and using a wrench or other appropriate tool rotate in both directions. Decoupler pulleys will rotate
freely in 1 direction and lock in the other. If the pulley rotates in both directions freely then immediate replacement is required. Additionally if the pulley does
not spin freely in the overrun direction then it also must be replaced.
Removing the Decouple Pulley:
1. Matching the center shaft design with the correct tool from the set. Warning: It may be difficult to physically see the center shaft design by eye so you may
need to try several different driver bits until the correct fit is found. (2)
2. Once identified place the correct center shaft driver / driver bit and the correct holding adapter through the Pulley Center and secure into center shaft. (1)(2)
3. Next, using a combination wrench on the pulley holding adapter to hold the pulley in place, attach the 1/2" or 3/8" drive ratchet or flex handle to the center
shaft driver bit and rotate the center shaft of the pulley counter clock-wise for right hand threaded pulleys and clock-wise for left hand threaded pulleys.
Warning: The instructions included with the new Alternator Decoupler Pulley should state the correct direction of rotation.
Installing the new Decoupler Pulley: (reverse the removal process)
1. Rotate the new Alternator Decoupler Pulley onto the center shaft until it is hand tight.
2. Insert the correct tools in place same as before (during the removal process) remembering to match up the correct Pulley Center holding tool and center
shaft driver bit for the new pulley. Warning: The proper tools may be different for the old and new pulleys depending on make and model.
3. Holding the adapter with a combination wrench, insert the 1/2" or 3/8" drive torque wrench into the center shaft driver bit and tighten down the center shaft
of the new Decouple Pulley to the specified torque. Warning: Check your vehicles specifications and/or the instructions that came with the new Decoupler
pulley for the correct torque spec.
4. Replace the plastic cover cap on the new Alternator Decoupler Pulley if necessary.
