Introduction
Volvo Pentas D4/D6-SOLAS engine is designed and
certified to fulfill the demands made on marine safety
equipment according to directive 96/98/EG.
In order to fulfill the demands of the directive, the fol-
lowing alterations and additions have been made to
the SOLAS-D4/D6 (see also figure below):
1. Alteration: Alternator moved to a higher position.
Function: The engine can run even in water up to
the center of the crankshaft.
2. Alteration: Starter motor draining sealed.
Function: The engine can run even in water up to
the center of the crankshaft.
3. Addition: A capsizing relay is mounted in the boat
and is connected to the engine's electrical system.
Function: The engine stops automatically if the
boat capsizes.
4. Addition: A solenoid valve is mounted between the
engine and the crankcase ventilation filter.
Function: The solenoid valve prevents oil leakage
from the engine if the boat capsizes.
