To inflate the HVLP cuff:
The knurled screw is closed and the bulb is squeezed to inflate
the HVLP cuff of the endotracheal/tracheostomy tube. After each
squeeze of the bulb, the manometer should be checked to en-
sure the HVLP cuff is inflated to the prescribed pressure range
(e.g. 20 – 30 cmH
can be opened to reduce the pressure in the HVLP cuff. As the air is
released, the user must monitor the manometer, and close the knurled
screw when the manometer needle displays the required pressure.
When the pressure is at the required level disconnect the TRACOE
cpm from the HVLP cuff.
To measure the HVLP cuff pressure:
The knurled screw is closed and the male Luer connector [L] is in-
serted into the open end of the inflation line [M]. The manometer will
display the current HVLP cuff pressure. If the pressure is too low, the
bulb can be squeezed to inflate the cuff. If the pressure is too high,
the knurled screw can be opened to reduce the cuff pressure. Once
the cuff pressure has been measured, disconnect the TRACOE cpm
from the inflation line of the HVLP cuff.
CAUTION: The TRACOE cuff pressure monitor is not suitable for con-
tinuous monitoring, and should be disconnected after use. If the device
remains connected, the HVLP cuff may lose pressure.
With a cuff pressure monitor device, such as the TRACOE cpm, there
will always be a small amount of air flowing from the cuff into the cuff
pressure monitor measuring chamber when the device is
connected to the inflation line (pilot balloon valve) of the endotracheal/
tracheostomy tube. This connection will result in a slight loss of cuff
pressure. If the TRACOE cpm is frequently connected to measure
the cuff pressure, a drop in cuff pressure may result, which does not
indicate a cuff leak. In this situation squeeze the bulb and reinflate to
the required cuff pressure.
