System operation
5.1.1
General
A system is an assembly of a hydraulic pump, hose(s), and one or more tools.
The hydraulic pump is driven by an internal combustion engine, electric motor, pneumatically or by hand
or foot power. This pump displaces hydraulic oil and is capable of building up pressure. The hose is for
transporting the hydraulic oil between the pump and the tool.
The double-acting tool has a hydraulic cylinder containing a piston that can move axially. If the cylinder
is pumped full from the bottom, pressure builds up beneath the piston so that it is pushed to the outside.
If the cylinder is pumped full from the top, the piston is forced back into the cylinder. In tools like
spreaders and wedges the axial movement of the piston starts a mechanism that makes a spreading or
lifting movement.
The direction of the movement of the piston is determined by the open or closed position of the control
valve on the pump. The control valve on the pump can be a manually operated valve or a electrically
controlled valve and a push button on the tool.
The hose is the piece of equipment that connects the pump to the tool, thus creating a closed system.
5.1.2
Quick-lock couplers
The tool is equipped with a male and a female Quick-lock coupler. Quick-lock couplers are pushed into
each other and then lock.
In case of duo hoses, the supply hose and the return hose are bundled together with ties. Each end of
the hose has a female and male coupler.
If you want to connect or disconnect a tool and/or a hose, you must first set the pressure relief valve on
the pump to the "neutral" position. After connecting the hose(s) and the tool you must set the pressure
relief valve to the "operation" position so you can use the tool.

Connect the hydraulic hoses
5.2.1
General
WARNING
Never use damaged couplers.
CAUTION
Never use pliers or similar to connect the hydraulic couplers.
5.2.2
Quick-Lock couplers
Refer to Fig. 4
WARNING
Always make sure that the pressure relief valve is in the open (0) position, before you
connect hydraulic hose(s) to the pump.
Turn the retainer ring on the female coupler anti-clockwise to unsecure the lock ring.
Remove the dust cap from the female coupler by pushing back the lock ring. The dust cap slips off.
Pull the dust cap from the male coupler.
Check the couplers for dirt and damage and clean them if necessary.
