Operation & use
6.1.
General information
6.1.1.
Consistency of the clay body
⇒ The consistency of the clay body (slab) to be processed determines the rolling result:
− Problems arise when rolling out, especially if the clay is too firm and/or has too much chamotte.
− The clay should be soft.
− Clay with a high chamotte percentage must be optimised for processing.
⇒ If the clay body is too dry or clay residues that have already been rolled are mixed together, they must be
re-moistened to obtain a good rolling result.
6.1.2.
Notes on processing the clay body
⇒ Only roll out one standard slab per rolling operation (clay body with a maximum of 10–12.5 kg).
⇒ Beat the clay body as flat as possible beforehand.
6.1.3.
Note on the linen cloth
⇒ Only roll out the clay body on undamaged linen cloths.
⇒ If the linen cloth is damaged, the clay body can stick to the roller when rolled out.
⇒ Adhering clay bodies lead to textures and bumps in the clay slab and thus negatively influence the rolling
result.
⇒ You can reorder replacements for damaged or worn linen cloths at any time (ROHDE item no.: 657080).
6.1.4.
Instructions for use
⇒ Always set the roller height uniformly on both sides.
⇒ Change the height of the adjustment wheels on both sides in increments of no more than 0.4 cm so the
roller guide does not jam.
⇒ Lay the slab on the linen cloth on the worktop and then lay the other cloth over it.
⇒ Roll gradually and reduce the distance between the roller and the worktop by a maximum of 3 cm per pass.
⇒ Turn the large wheel handle slowly, evenly and without stopping when rolling out.
⇒ Also, only use the large wheel handle to turn the roller backwards. Do not pull on the linen cloth!
⇒ Move the roller back and forth several times to obtain an even rolling result.
Alternative:
Rotate the clay body from bottom to top or 90° left or right before the next rolling stage. The more often
you turn the clay body in each direction, the more even the rolling result of the clay slab will be. However,
this is only recommended to a limited extent because the slab can easily break apart when turning and
moving it or can even tear later in the kiln.
⇒ The clay body has to be brought to the desired thickness in several rolling operations.
⇒ Ensure no foreign matter comes between the roller and the work surface. This inevitably leads to damage to
the slab roller.
6.1.5.
Note on use as a tabletop device
⇒ The slab roller can also be used as a tabletop device with the table legs removed.
⇒ The slab roller is heavy. Therefore, dismantle the table legs with two, or better yet, four people.
⇒ Mount the supplied cover caps where the table legs were previously inserted, and then lift the device onto a
sturdy table with several people.
