Diatomaceous earth consists of both freshwater
and seawater unicellular algae that
has the capacity of retaining the silica that is dissolved in the water. After dying, the skeletons
'of these algae fossilize forming
a white rock, which is both light and porous, and known as
1 diatomite, By drying and crushing this rock, the diatomite powder is obtained that is used in
water filtration. Because of its porosity and the reduced size of the diatomite, auround 0.036
mm, particles of up to 2 microns can be filtered. |
