Please use original MAFELL saw chains only.
Commercially obtainable saw chains are not suita-
ble for this type of machine. Each time the chain is
changed, check that the chain tension is correct.
Riving knife/splitter 4 (ill. 1) including the guard
plate for the bottom bearing end 6 must not be
removed.
The ZS 260 E is to be operated by one person
only and it must be used in such a way only that
base plate 3 serves as support.
Before working with the machine, make sure
that the tank contains oil for lubricating the chain
and that the chain lubrication is working (see
paragraph 3.4).
Before switching on, make sure the machine is
properly supported and that you hold it firmly.
The bar and chain must not be in contact with
anything. Do not start cutting the workpiece until
the saw chain has reached full speed. Make
sure that your footing is secure.
The switch must not be held down permanently by
mechanical means while the machine is running.
Keep hands well away from the area under the
base plate and the chip ejection area when sawing.
Never carry the machine when the saw chain is
running. Make sure that, apart from the work-
piece, the moving saw chain cannot come into
contact with any other adjacent objects.
Never remove the sprocket cover 12 (ill. 1)
when the machine is running. Remove this
cover only to change chains and replace it again
immediately afterwards.
Since the machine cannot be connected to an
extraction device, its use is permitted only out-
doors or on well ventilated premises.
Once cutting has started in a defined direction, do
not attempt to change direction by force. The
machine must be advanced in such a way that the
pressure does not bring the chain to a standstill.
Examine the workpiece for foreign objects. Never
attempt to cut into metal pieces, e.g. nails.
When sawing, always lead the cable away from
the machine to the rear.
Immediately pull out the mains plug when the
cable has been damaged or severed.
Match the feed rate to the thickness of the tim-
ber when sawing. Excessive feed rates overload
the motor, lead to poorly executed cuts, and
blunt the saw chain prematurely.
Do not remove the carpenter´s chain saw from the
workpiece until the saw chain is stationary. Thanks
to the built-in brake the saw blade stops rapidly.
Instructions on service and maintenance:
Regular cleaning of the machine, especially the
adjusting devices for the base plate and guide-
ways, is an important safety factor. Before
beginning this task, pull out the mains plug.
Only original MAFELL spare parts and accesso-
ries must be used. Otherwise the manufacturer
does not offer any warranty and does not accept
any liability.

Setting up / Adjusting
3.1
Mains connection
The carpenter's chain saw ZS 260 E has Class II
protective insulation (double-insulated).
Before starting up, make sure that the mains voltage
matches the voltage stated on the rating plate.
3.2
Changing the saw chain
Pull out the mains plug before
retightening the saw chain.
Proceed as follows to retighten the saw chain:
• Using the combination screw driver 11 provided,
which is mounted on sprocket cover 12 (ill. 1), slacken
off cylinder-head screw 13 and fold down the cover.
• Open spring-loaded bottom guard flap 15 down-
wards and secure with cover in the open position.
• Unscrew and remove Allen screw 18 (ill. 2) and
take off intermediate cover 19 including oil tank.
• Slacken off fixing screw 5 (ill. 1) for the bottom
bearing end guard and fold down guard plate 6.
• Slacken off chain tension by turning tensioning
screw 20 (ill. 3) counter-clockwise using the com-
bination screw driver 11.
• Pull off chain bar 21 including saw chain and
sprocket 22 towards the front and take off the chain.
• Place new or newly sharpened saw chain on the
chain bar and the sprocket. Make sure that the
cutting edges of the chain are pointing in the
direction of rotation indicated by marking 24 and
that the chain tensioning bolt engages in the bore
in the chain bar provided for this purpose.
