USER'S MANUAL. PROLITE-90
6 APPENDIX A: APPLICATION NOTE:
AUTOMATIC MEASUREMENT OF THE OPTICAL ATTENUATION FOR A FIBRE
NETWORK AT WAVELENGTHS: λ=1310 nm and λ=1550 nm.
Next is described the procedure to take attenuation measurements for an
optical communications network at the wavelengths of 1310 nm and 1550 nm. For it,
you might use the optical power meter PROLITE-20 or PROLITE-21 and selecting the
automatic mode supported by the PROLITE-90. The attenuation or losses in a cable or
optical device corresponds to the difference between the input coupled power and the
output obtained power.
Measuring the reference power
Before initiating the network attenuation measurement process, it is advisable to
register first, the power measurements generated by the light source in combination
with a PROLITE-20/21 and saving them in the memory, by this way when measuring
later the attenuation of the optical communications network the PROLITE-20/21 will
indicate to us directly the reached attenuation value. Next, the procedure is described
(see figure 2).
•
Connect the light source to the power level meter by means of an optical fibre
patchcord.
•
Set-up the PROLITE-20/21 for measuring at 1310 nm and 1550 nm
wavelengths only by means of the function Set Wavelength (see section
4.2.3. of the PROLITE-20/21 user's manual)
