Definition of a sprained ankle
An ankle is sprained when the ligaments connecting the bones of the
ankle joint rupture or are stretched beyond their normal limits.
Swellings occur when tissues and blood vessels adjoining the ligaments
are also injured.
The most common cause of a sprained ankle is socalled "inversion".
During inversion the outer border of the foot hits the ground and rolls
inward. In rare cases the ankle can also be sprained by "eversion". In
eversion the inner border of the foot hits the ground and turns
outward. In both cases the degree of sprain can vary widely, from
overstretch to one or more ruptured ligaments.
Treatment of a sprained ankle
A sprained ankle can be treated as follows:
Elevating the leg, applying ice packs, compression and movement.
Elevate the foot for 10 to 20 minutes four to six times a day and apply
an ice pack. This relieves the pain and eases swelling. Then put the
brace on straight away and keep your foot moving. If walking is too
painful a few exercises will help bridge the gap until you can
weightbear on the foot. Flex your foot up as far as it will go and hold
this position for a few seconds. Then point your toes as far as they will
go and again hold this position for a few seconds. Repeat these
