Operation (cont'd)
Follow these steps, which are described in greater detail
in this section, to operate the bender.
1. Set up the bender as described under "Setup."
2. Turn on the power switch. Do not touch any keys on
the pendant until text appears on the display.
3. Select the size and type of conduit to bend.
4. If necessary, set the home position of the proper
bending shoe and hook.
5. Compute the desired bend.
6. Program the bend.
7. Mark the conduit.
8. Load the conduit so that the bending mark is aligned
with the front edge of the shoe hook.
9. Engage the rollers:
• For all types of conduit sizes 1/2" to 1-1/4"
• For EMT, IMC, or aluminum rigid type of conduit
sizes 1-1/2" to 2"
10. Press and hold the BEND button. The bender will
slow down and stop at the programmed angle.
11. To unload the conduit for multiple bends:
• Press and hold the UNLOAD button until the shoe
automatically stops at the conduit loading position.
• Push the conduit through the hook to the next
bending mark. (Completed bends should always
be to the left of hooks.) Rotate the pipe 180
degrees, if necessary.
• Repeat the bend procedure until the final bend.
To unload the conduit on the last bend, twist and
release the conduit from the shoe after rotating it
back approximately 10 degrees.
Notes:
• For complex programmed bends, follow the prompts
on the deluxe display.
• Programmed bends are stored in memory and can be
repeated until the conduit size or type is changed or
until power is removed.
• Springback is preprogrammed and included in the
digital readout.
• Do not allow a bend or coupler to go over the roller
supports.
• Do not allow the trailing end of the conduit to go
over the roller supports.
Failure to observe these warnings can result in
severe injury or death.

Selecting the Size and Type
of Conduit to Bend
You must indicate the size and type of conduit to bend
so that the 855 Smart Bender can properly calculate the
load point, springback, and slow down to complete
accurate, repeatable bends.
When using the standard pendent, rotate the CONDUIT
SIZE and CONDUIT TYPE selector switches on the side
of the bender to the appropriate settings.
When using the deluxe pendant, ignore the rotary
selector switches and use the red keys on the deluxe
pendant instead:
• Press the 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, or 2 key to select
the conduit size in inches.
• Press the EMT/IMC/RIG key until the appropriate
conduit type is displayed ("EMT," "IMC," "RIG," "ALM,"
or "PVC").
Setting the Home Position
After selecting the size and type of conduit, you must
properly position the bend shoe to load conduit.
When the pendant displays "H." or "Set Home Position,"
follow this procedure:
1. Press and hold UNLOAD until the shoe hook for the
type and size selected is at the bottom (5 o'clock)
position.
2. Press and hold BEND until the display starts
counting.
3. Press and hold UNLOAD. The bender automatically
stops at the load point.
The shoe hooks are color coded for quick reference:
• Silver: EMT conduit
• Green: IMC, rigid steel, and rigid aluminum conduit
• Black (optional): 40 Mil PVC-coated rigid steel conduit
