Kinetex
Core-Shell Technology columns provide
®
performance gains on any LC system.
Please carefully read these care and use notes to
obtain the best results on your system.
Avoid:
Operating below the lower pH limit specified for each Kinetex
column as this will hydrolyze the bonded phase
Operating above the upper pH limit specified for each Kinetex
column as this will dissolve the silica
Operating a Kinetex 1.3 µm column in the opposite direction to what
is indicated by the arrow on the column tag
Immiscible solvents and buffers
Sudden pressure changes
Operating Backpressure
The maximum operating pressure for Kinetex 5 µm and 2.6 μm columns
is 8,700 psi (600 bar)*, and for Kinetex 1.7 μm and 1.3 µm columns it is
15,000 psi (1,000 bar). The mobile phase flow rate should be set such
that the column backpressure does not exceed this maximum operating
pressure. Note that operating at or near the maximum pressure will
result in shorter column lifetimes.
* 2.1 mm ID columns are pressure stable up to 1,000 bar.
Operating Temperatures
Kinetex columns can be used up to a maximum temperature of 60 °C.
Reduced mobile phase viscosity (and backpressure) and increased
mass transfer rates will be realized above 25 °C. When operating at
high pH (> 8), lower operating temperatures are recommended for
longer column lifetime. Note that operating at or near the maximum
temperature will result in shorter column lifetimes.
Column Cleaning and Regeneration
If an increase in operating backpressure is observed, reverse flush
the column (do not try this on any Kinetex 1.3 µm column or any other
manufacturers' columns) with reduced flow rates indicated below:

Reversed Phase (C18, EVO C18, XB-C18, C8, Biphenyl, Phenyl-
Hexyl, F5 and PFP)
Kinetex reversed phase columns can be cleaned by flushing with 10 to
20 column volumes of the following solvent mixtures in succession:
1) 5:95 Acetonitrile / Water (or Methanol / Water) for buffer removal
2) 95:5 Acetonitrile / Water (or Methanol / Water)
3) THF (Tetrahydrofuran)
4) 95:5 Acetonitrile / Water (or Methanol / Water)
5) 5:95 Acetonitrile / Water (or Methanol / Water)
6) Equilibrate with mobile phase
HILIC
Kinetex HILIC columns can be cleaned by flushing with 10 to 20 column
volumes of:
1) 95 % Water / 5 % Acetonitrile (For buffer removal)
2) 95 % 100 mM Ammonium Acetate, pH 5.8 / 5 % Acetonitrile
3) 95 % Water / 5 % Acetonitrile
4) Equilibrate with mobile phase
