4. Use and Maintenance of Soldering Bit

4. 1 Selection of Soldering Bit

1) Select a soldering bit with the largest contact area with the welding spot so that the most efficient heat transfer can be ensured
and the operator can finish a high-quality welding spot quickly.
2) Select a soldering bit with a good path for transferring heat to the welding spot. The short soldering bit allows precise heat control.
However, for densely assembled circuit boards, a long or angled soldering bit would be better.

4.2 Maintenance of Soldering Bit

4.2.1 Precautions for use of soldering bit
1) Select the temperature as low as possible because a too high temperature will shorten the service life of the soldering bit. The
soldering station has an excellent temperature recovery capability, and full soldering is also possible at a low temperature to
protect temperature sensitive components.
2) When you continuously use the soldering iron for a long time, disassemble the soldering bit once a week and remove oxides to
prevent temperature reduction of the soldering bit due to any damage.
3) When not in use, turn off the power supply as far as possible to extend the service life, and do not keep the soldering iron in a high
temperature for a long time; otherwise, the flux on the soldering bit may be converted into oxides and greatly degrade the heat
conductivity of the soldering bit.
4) Coat new soldering tin after each use, so as to prevent the oxidation of the soldering bit and extend its service life.
5) Regularly clean the soldering bit with a cleaning sponge. The oxides and carbides derived from the residual flux on the soldering bit
after soldering may damage the bit to cause soldering errors or degrade the heat conductivity of the bit.
6) Use a temperature as low as possible during working, because a low temperature can reduce the oxidation of the soldering bit and
make soldering of components easier.
7) Use a thin soldering bit only when necessary, as the tin coating of a thin bit is less durable that a thick bit.
8) Do not use the soldering bit as a detection tool, because the bit will crack once bent and its service life will be shortened in this
case.
9) Use the flux with less activated rosin, as too much activated rosin will accelerate the corrosion of the tin coating on the soldering
bit.
10) Do not apply a high pressure to the soldering bit because a high pressure does not mean a fast heat transfer. To improve the heat
transfer, it is required to melt the soldering tin to form a solder bridge for heat transfer between the soldering bit and the welding
spot.
