ETTING THE TIME
1. Unscrew the winding crown (A) and pull it out to the second click (position
2).
2. Set the correct time.
3. Push back the winding crown (A) to the initial position (0) and screw it down
again.
For a rapid change of the time, pull out the winding crown (A) to the first click
(position 1). In this position the hour hand (B) moves forwards or backwards
in steps of one hour without moving the minutes hand (C).
T
HE SECONDS RESET DEVICE
The little continuous seconds dial (D) is located at 9 o'clock. When the
winding crown (A) is pulled out to the second click (position 2), the small
seconds hand immediately returns to zero. The seconds reset device is an
extremely accurate way of synchronising the watch with the reference time
signal.
Note: as soon as the seconds reset is put in operation, the seconds hand
returns to zero and the balance stops. If the winding crown is accidentally
pulled out to position 2, the resulting zeroing of the seconds hand means that
the time will have to be set again.
S
ETTING THE DATE AND THE MONTH
Your watch has a gradual date change mechanism, a process which takes
about 3 hours to complete: from 10 p.m. to 1.00 a.m., with a margin of ± 30
minutes. This particular method of changing the date is inspired by the
mechanical tradition of Swiss watchmaking and it allows the date to be
changed in both directions, moving it either forwards or backwards.
The month and date setting is carried out by moving the hour hand:
1. Unscrew the winding crown ( ) and pull it out to the first click (position 1).
2. Turn the winding crown ( ) forwards or backwards until the desired month
24
is gradually indicated by the hand of the month indicator (E) at 3 o'clock.
3. When the month is correctly set, continue to move the hour hand (B)
clockwise or anti-clockwise until the required date appears in the date
window at 3 o'clock. If the date changes when the hour hand (B) goes past
12, then 12 corresponds to midnight, otherwise it corresponds to midday.
3. Return the winding crown ( ) to the initial position (0) and screw it down
again.
Note: your Panerai watch features the rapid change of time that allows to
move the hour hand (B) forwards or backwards in steps of one hour and to
change the date in both directions, moving it either forwards or backwards.

HE EQUATION OF TIME
F
The equation of time is the difference between the time shown by the watch,
which is that universally adopted for convenience, and real or solar time,
which varies every day owing to the eccentricity of the Earth's orbit and the
inclination of its axis. On four days a year, these two times coincide perfectly,
but on all the other days they differ by up to about 15 minutes, either forwards
or backwards.
The linear indicator at 6 o'clock (F) immediately shows this time difference.
The equation of time indicator is automatically set by setting the correct date
and month.
When the value shown by the linear equation of time indicator (at six o'clock)
is positive, the figure indicating the civil time is higher than the solar time one
(the solar time can thus be calculated by subtracting the variance). On the
contrary, when the value shown by the linear equation of time indicator is
negative, the figure indicating the civil time is lower than the solar time one (the
solar time can thus be calculated by adding the variance).
