Is it Equal?
Skill: Composing and decomposing numbers to create equality.
Materials:
•
Nestable Bucket Balance
•
Cubes (or other consistently sized item)
•
Paper and pencil
Put 8 green cubes in one bucket and 5 blue cubes in the other.
Have the child set the comparison indicator to greater than, equal
to, or less than. Ask, "How would you write this as an equation?" (8>5)
How many yellow cubes will it take to make the 2 sides balance or
be equal?" Add yellow cubes 1 at a time until the arms are balanced.
Move the comparison slider to the equal to symbol (=). Ask, "How
would you write this as an equation?" (8=8 or 8=5+3) Repeat this
activity with different numbers. When children are ready for a
challenge, introduce true and false statements such as, "Write the
equation 4+1=5+2. Is this a true statement? Do the buckets balance?
If not, what would you need to do to make them balance?"
Heavy Water
Skill: Weighing and comparing liquids.
Materials:
•
Nestable Bucket Balance
•
Water
•
Cubes (or other consistently size item)
Remove a bucket from the balance arm. Pour 50 mL of water into
the bucket. Carefully place the bucket on the balance arm. Put
cubes in the empty bucket 1 at a time, until it balances. Ask, "How
many cubes does the water weigh?" Carefully add another 50 mL of
water. Ask, "How many cubes will you need to add so the buckets are
equal? Do all liquids weigh the same?" Weigh other liquids to check.
