4.1.1

Information on operation

The BAT 490 must be supplied with voltage via
a grounded lighting system.
Make exclusive use of the charging cables supplied
by Bosch.
The power cord and charging cables must be in per-
fect working order.
Never extend or shorten charging cables.
Only charge batteries in well ventilated areas.
Avoid naked flames and spark formation when char-
ging batteries.
Only connect intact batteries in parallel for charging.
Never attempt to charge non-rechargeable batteries.
Switch off all electrical equipment in the vehicle
whilst charging (also applies to charging of exhaus-
ted batteries).
Set the On/Off switch to "0" (OFF) before connec-
ting the BAT 490 to the power supply.
On standard batteries, unscrew the cell sealing plugs
before charging.
When charging vehicle batteries on the vehicle,
connect the black charging clip (–) to the body well
away from the battery and fuel pipe.
Switch off the BAT 490 before disconnecting the
charging clips.
Never disconnect the charging clips in the course of
charging.
Never disconnect the battery from the vehicle elec-
trical system whilst charging is in progress.
Never short-circuit charging clips.
i
In the event of incorrect polarity and terminal short-
circuit no charging voltage is applied and a fault
message appears. BAT 490 does not recognize batte-
ries with a voltage lower than 2 V. This threshold is
required to guarantee inverse-polarity protection at
the BAT 490.

of the BAT 490 and the weight of the battery to be
charged.
Protect the BAT 490 against damp and moisture.
Never cover up the BAT 490.
On installing the BAT 490 maintain an all-round clea-
