5.5 Alternator Test (Normal and Smart 12V/24V alternators)
This test confirms if the alternator charging voltage is within the correct limits to avoid under or overcharging of the battery
1. Connect test leads with battery clamps to meter
2. Turn Selector Dial to Voltage Mode (V position)
3. Select Alternator Mode
4. Display will flash as below to show clamps need connecting to battery
5. Connect red clamp to battery positive(+) and black clamp to battery negative(-)
Note:
The tester will automatically detect whether it is a 12V or 24V vehicle based on the battery voltage detected after clamping.
6. Select Normal or Smart alternator depending on type fitted to vehicle then press
OR
12V Battery
7. Three test will now be carried out to check the vehicle alternator:
5.5.1 Unloaded Voltage Test
Rev engine to
2,500 - 3,000 RPM
1. Ensure all vehicle accessories are turned OFF
2. Hold engine revs between 2,500-3,000 then press
3. Maintain engine revs until countdown timer reaches zero
Timer countdown
from 10s to 0s
4. When timer reaches zero the results will automatically be displayed
5. After 3 seconds the display will automatically move to the next test:

then press
button to continue
24V Battery
to start the test
Turn Air conditioning OFF
Hold accelerator for 10 seconds
Hold engine revs at
2,500 – 3,000 RPM
