Zip Discs to Back-up Pad
Attaching Zip Disc to Back-up Pad
• Hold tool shaft lock button down. Note: If you have difficulty holding down the shaft
lock button, turn the back-up pad until you can depress the button all the way down.
• Look at the non-abrasive side of the Zip Disc. Notice how the 3 hooks on the triangular
locking piece will fit into the indentations of the back-up pad's lock nut.
(Photo 5-3).
• Line up the hooks on the non-abrasive disc side
with the indentations on the pad. Don't worry about
lining up the holes just yet.
• With your palm flat and not hanging too far over
the sides of pad, place pressure on the disc while
turning it clockwise.(Photo 5-4) You should feel
the disc fully lock into place and fit flat and tight
against the back-up pad. Now the holes from the
pad and disc should be lined-up with one
another.(Photo 5-5)

Test Zip Disc
• Test disc for concentricity and operating smoothness. Hold machine in a protected
environment (steel drum or barrel) with the backside of Zip Mate facing the operator and the
edges of the pad facing the drum. If wobble or rough operation occurs, do not proceed. Check
pad and tool for balance and defects. Replace as necessary to ensure smooth operation

Troubleshooting Notes
1. *NOTE: if you have difficulty
attaching a disc to the pad, try
using the wrench.
(Photo 5-2 on previous page.)
2. If you have trouble fitting the hooks
in place, you may need to slightly
bend them out. Run the handle of
the wrench under the hooks of the
disc and lightly pull up on the
handle. Now try placing the disc on
the back-up pad again. (Photo 5-6)

Operating Instructions
Zip Disc Operating Instructions
• Make sure material being worked on is secured in a vise or
fixture before attempting to sand, grind, or polish.
• Using both hands, hold the equipment away from the
operators body with the backside of the Zip Mate facing the
operator and the edges of the pad facing protective walls.
(Photo 5-7)
• Turn the equipment on and when it reaches normal
operating speed, begin the sanding operation.
Always ease disc onto the work surface. Operate tool with disc/pad
assembly inclined approximately 5˚ to 15˚ to the work surface.
1-Never use tool at a steeper angle than 15˚.
2-Never use tool flat.
3-Never use the edge of the disc/pad assembly.
• Do not sand sharp edges, corners or projections that may snag the edge of the pad/disc assembly.
• Move the sander slowly back and forth in overlapping areas. Let the sander do the work. Do
not put additional pressure on the sander. This slows down the speed of the pad, reducing
sanding efficiency and puts additional burden on the disc, pad and tool motor.
• To achieve the desired finish, simply adjust the grinding angle of the wheel. The lesser the
angle, the finer the finish. The normal grinding angle is 15˚. DO NOT use flat.
• Proper sanding requires starting with sandpaper just coarse enough to remove the high spots
and surface roughness and changing to successively finer sandpaper until the desired surface
is achieved.
• Periodically check disc to see if a replacement is necessary. Sanding certain materials can coat or
gum-up discs and decrease disc life.
• It is necessary to remove used sandpaper from pad before storing the tool. Sandpaper can be
difficult to remove if left on the pad for a long period of time.
ATTENTION: If you run the tool continuously for more then 5 minutes, it is normal for the housing
to feel warm.
Removing Zip Disc
• Turn tool OFF and wait until the disc has come to a complete stop. Disconnect from power source.
• Hold down the tool shaft lock button. Note: If you have trouble depressing it, rotate
the pad and disc until you are able to hold the
shaft lock button all the way down.
• With your palm flat and not hanging too far over
the sides, place pressure on the disc while
turning it counter-clockwise. The correct
combination of pressure and turning of the disc
will unlock it from the back-up pad. Remove disc.
